Montgomery Aces Oxbow

In an exciting display of golfing prowess, Russ Montgomery from Parkersburg made headlines with a spectacular hole-in-one at the Oxbow Golf Course. Executing a perfect shot on the 105-yard par 3 fourth hole, Montgomery used a pitching wedge to achieve this remarkable feat. The moment was shared with witnesses Bryan Dowler and Steve Florence, who undoubtedly appreciated the skill and precision required to sink that elusive ace.

Miller Aces Minibel

Continuing the trend of impressive golfing achievements, Donnie Miller added another hole-in-one to the local golf scene at Minibel Golf Course. On Saturday, Miller scored his ace on hole No. 5 using a 7-iron, showcasing his golfing talent. The accomplishment was witnessed by friends and fellow golfers Zach Miller, Braydon Duty, Dakota Duty, and Stacy Gage, who celebrated the moment with him.

Hamilton Middle School Tennis Practices

As summer continues, the City Park tennis courts are set to undergo resurfacing starting July 25. In light of this, Hamilton Middle School’s tennis practices and matches will be relocated to the Jackson Park tennis courts in Vienna. Participants are reminded to come prepared with water, a racquet, appropriate tennis shoes, and their WVSSAC physical forms if they haven’t submitted them yet for the first practice.

The practice schedule spans various dates:

  • July 28-Aug. 1: 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Aug. 4-8: 10:30 a.m.-noon
  • Aug. 11-15 and Aug. 18-22: 5:15-6:45 p.m.

Matches for middle school students will commence the week of August 25. A tennis parent meeting is scheduled for July 27 at 4 p.m. on the front steps of Hamilton Middle School—participants are encouraged to bring a chair.

MOVTA Youth Tennis Tournament

Mark your calendars for the 2025 MOVTA Summer Tennis Tournament, set to take place on July 26-27 at Jackson Park tennis courts. Play could commence as early as 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, with match times available by calling Mike Politz at 304-588-0809 after 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 24.

The tournament format will be a round-robin in approximately two-hour time blocks, with match formats varying according to the number of participants in each age group. Players can enter up to two events, which are open to both USTA and non-USTA players, making it an inclusive opportunity.

Registration details include:

  • Singles events at $15 each
  • Doubles events at $15 per individual, or $30 per team

Divisions will include Boys and Girls 10u, 12u, and 14U. Interested participants can register online at MOVTA’s official site, with a registration deadline of July 22.

West Virginia Baseball Camp

Aspiring young baseball enthusiasts should note the upcoming WVU Baseball Camp, to be held at The Dugout in Parkersburg from 4-7 p.m. on July 24. Designed for children aged 5-12, the camp promises an engaging environment for young players to hone their skills. More details can be found at wvucamps.com.

Local Junior Tennis Tournaments

For junior tennis players, several upcoming tournaments are on the horizon, including:

  • Summer Junior Tournament: July 26-27
  • Honey Festival Tournament: August 23-24
  • Middle School Mixed Doubles Tournament (co-sponsored by MOVTA and Wood County Schools, for team players only): September 20
  • Rotary Championship Tournament: First weekend in November (registration via the USTA website)

Colorado Rockies Showcase in Struthers, Ohio

Baseball players have an exciting opportunity with the annual Colorado Rockies showcase taking place at Cene Park Baseball Complex in Struthers, Ohio, on Saturday, August 9. This event, hosted by scout Ed Santa, is geared toward high school players.

In conjunction with the showcase, there will be team games that weekend for uncommitted players, with each team slated to play three games—one on Saturday evening following the showcase, and two on Sunday. The cost to register a team is $480, with a field limit of 12 teams. Interested parties should contact Ken Quinn at 330-719-0581 to secure a spot.

Each of these events highlights the vibrant sporting community in the region, offering opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and engage with their peers in a spirited and competitive environment.
