Help Needed: Wisconsin Humane Society Seeks Foster Homes for Cats and Kittens

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is reaching out to the community for urgent support in fostering pets, particularly cats and kittens. The demand has surged in recent days, prompting the organization to call for individuals and families willing to provide temporary homes for these vulnerable animals.

Unprecedented Intake of Animals

Recent reports indicate that both the Green Bay and Milwaukee campuses of WHS have experienced an “unprecedented intake” of animals, with a staggering number of surrendered cats contributing to the crisis. On just one Tuesday, WHS took in 100 new felines, raising the total number of animals under their care to approximately 1,500. Out of these, nearly 1,100 are cats or kittens desperately seeking a comforting environment away from the bustling shelter life.

The Benefits of Foster Programs

Engaging in the foster program not only helps reduce overcrowding in shelter facilities but also allows animals to experience a quieter, more homely environment. This move can significantly decrease the stress these animals face in shelter conditions, providing them with an opportunity to socialize and adjust outside of the noisy, busy surroundings.

Angela Speed from WHS shares, “As novel as it is to have cats in office spaces, these kitties would greatly appreciate a vacation in your spare room or even bathroom.” This playful suggestion highlights the need for more personal, intimate spaces where cats can feel secure and loved.

Selecting Your Foster Pet

One of the appealing aspects of becoming a foster parent through WHS is the ability to choose your foster pet. Individuals and families can opt for a particular animal based on their preferences and circumstances. Detailed information about each animal is provided, including age, personality traits, medical needs, and expected duration of the fostering period, allowing for informed decisions before making a commitment.

Space Requirements and Compatibility

For those worried about space, WHS reassures potential foster families that you don’t need a large home. Most animals, especially when they first arrive in a new environment, adjust better if kept in one designated room. Additionally, families with children and other pets are encouraged to participate in the foster program. WHS provides guidelines to ensure that the chosen animal is a good fit for homes with young children or multiple pets.

Supporting Animals in Need

Fostering is not just about providing a home; many animals require special care before they can be placed for adoption. Some may need to recover from illness or injury, while others could be anxious or fearful in shelter settings. Additionally, kittens and puppies often need fostering until they grow old enough for adoption. Thankfully, WHS supports its foster families by supplying food, medicine, and any necessary supplies, making the process as seamless as possible.

Encouraging Adoption

Alongside the call for foster homes, the Wisconsin Humane Society is also implementing promotions to encourage adoption and alleviate the overwhelming number of animals in its care. The current adoption promotions include $0 fees for adult cats, a 50% discount on kitten adoption fees, and $75 fees for adult dogs. Furthermore, the “benchwarmer” program allows potential adopters to take select dogs home for a 7-day trial period, making it easier to find the perfect match for their family.

For those interested in fostering, more information is available on the Wisconsin Humane Society website, where you can also watch a video explaining the fostering process and fill out an application.
