Global CEOs Intensify Focus on AI Talent Acquisition Amid Economic Challenges

Published:

### CEO Confidence at a Five-Year Low

In a striking revelation, the KPMG 2025 Global CEO Outlook indicates that CEO confidence in the global economy has reached a five-year low. This shift comes as corporate leaders strategically pivot towards investments in artificial intelligence (AI), talent acquisition, and risk resilience, all essential for sustainability and future growth.

### A Changing Landscape for CEOs

The survey, which encompasses insights from over 1,300 global leaders, reveals a considerable shift in leadership strategy in response to mounting challenges. Currently, 68 percent of CEOs express confidence in the trajectory of the world economy, a decline from 72 percent the previous year. This downturn reflects a prolonged trend of dwindling confidence among corporate leaders, influenced by persistent geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, climate challenges, and evolving digital demands.

### Regional Perspectives: Caricom Challenges

Raymond Campbell, Country Leader for KPMG in the Caricom region, highlights the compounded challenges faced by small, open economies. He notes that resilience must be deliberately cultivated through investments in infrastructure, smarter technology, and robust talent development. While regions like Caricom may lag in AI investments compared to larger markets, Campbell stresses that prioritizing AI in planning and implementation is vital for economic sustainability and competitive advantage.

### Leadership Adaptation Amidst Uncertainty

Despite the challenging landscape, a cautious semblance of optimism remains. Ninety-two percent of CEOs plan to increase their headcount in the next year, indicating a commitment to growth despite external factors. Furthermore, 40 percent anticipate earnings growth exceeding 2.5 percent in the coming months, and 89 percent foresee activity in mergers and acquisitions. Yet, significant barriers like cybercrime, workforce readiness for AI, and effective AI integration loom large.

### Prioritizing Agility and Risk Management

Economic and geopolitical turbulence is prompting CEOs to reassess their leadership styles and strategies. A majority, 72 percent, have already altered their growth plans, yet there remains a divide on the specific capabilities needed to thrive in a fast-evolving environment. While agility and quick decision-making are paramount for 26 percent of leaders, transparency in communication (24 percent) and risk prioritization (23 percent) are also vital considerations.

### The Rise of Human-Centric AI

As they navigate a turbulent economic terrain, CEOs are increasingly focusing on AI and technological innovation. Nearly three-quarters (71 percent) view AI as a key investment priority for 2026, with 69 percent earmarking 10 to 20 percent of their budgets for AI within the next year. However, the accelerated adoption of AI presents new boardroom challenges, including ethical implications (59 percent), data readiness (52 percent), and regulatory gaps (50 percent). There is a growing consensus that effective governance will be crucial for the sustained success of AI initiatives.

### Emphasizing Effective Implementation of AI

The report further illustrates that successful AI adoption hinges on effective implementation. A people-led approach is gaining traction among CEOs, with 61 percent actively recruiting talent skilled in AI and technology. However, the fierce competition for AI talent and the challenge of workforce upskilling are significant concerns, with 70 percent indicating competition for AI professionals and 77 percent recognizing the urgency of enhancing skills within their organizations.

### Caribbean Opportunities in a Global Context

Chris Brome, Head of Advisory at KPMG in Caricom, emphasizes that global trends present both warnings and opportunities for Caribbean organizations. He urges regional markets not to remain passive observers in the face of accelerated AI adoption elsewhere. The essential priorities—governance, data readiness, and talent—must become focal points as the region lays the groundwork for success in an increasingly AI-driven global landscape.
