The Heartwarming Journey of Grace: A Fluffy Chihuahua and Her Impact on Naples Pets
A Fluffy Little Start
In Naples, Florida, a chihuahua named Grace is not just another pet; her story has inspired a transformative effort to help local animals. Rescued from abandonment in Miami, Grace found a loving home with Vici Nadvit, a Naples resident who was confronted by a troubling reality. "How could anyone abandon a dog so sweet?" she pondered, leading her to the realization that financial hardships often leave pet owners in difficult positions.
The Birth of Saving Grace
Motivated by Grace’s plight, Vici decided to take action. In her words, "It’s a shame that we don’t have something like Harry Chapin for pets… I’m going to start it, I’m going to do it. And we named it Saving Grace." This simple yet profound mission led her to establish a pet food bank in 2017, initially in her own apartment. Racks filled with donated pet food overflowed from floor to ceiling as Vici dedicated countless hours to bagging supplies for those in need.
Rising Needs After Hurricane Irma
The aftermath of Hurricane Irma highlighted the urgent need for pet food assistance. Many families found themselves struggling to make ends meet, with one more furry mouth to feed leading toward an even tougher situation. It quickly became evident that what began as a small apartment operation required a dedicated space.
A New Home for Saving Grace
Saving Grace eventually secured a modest location at 938A 4th Avenue North in downtown Naples, where it operates solely on donations. Local pet stores contribute food whenever brands change or excess inventory arises, while community members frequently drop off supplies or monetary donations.
A Selfless Mission
What’s particularly compelling about Saving Grace is the dedication displayed by Vici and her close friend, Sam DeAngelis, who co-manage the nonprofit. Neither takes a salary; Vici continues with her regular job, and they even opted to shutter their website to ensure that every dollar goes directly to pet food. "Our mission is simple: make sure no one has to choose between feeding themselves or their pets," Vici explains poignantly.
Service Hours and Outreach
Saving Grace operates every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m., providing food to families in need. Individuals seeking help can fill out a brief form detailing their pet’s needs, including allergies or dietary restrictions. The nonprofit advocates for responsible pet ownership and prefers that pets be spayed or neutered or in the process.
Making a Difference
For many families in Naples, this initiative has been a lifeline. Eddy Stratford, a frequent visitor, explains, "I love it. It’s really been a great help. I substitute teach, I’m a veteran, and it’s hard to make that much money unless you’re really wealthy here." Eddy’s experiences are echoed by many as Saving Grace continues to witness an influx of patrons, especially during challenging times like government shutdowns when basic necessities become a struggle.
Facing Rising Costs
The rising costs of pet food have further amplified the demand for assistance. Customers like Iris Fass emphasize the importance of such resources: "This is a great place, and I know the prices of pet food have gone up—way up."
A Personal Connection
For Vici, the most gratifying aspect of her work is the bond she forms with the pets and their families. "It makes me happy to see these pets I’ve come to know," she shares. Her compassionate approach ensures families do not have to surrender their beloved companions due to financial constraints.
