Remembering Jim Lane: A Pillar of Altoona Sports Journalism

Jim Lane
The Altoona community is mourning the passage of Jim Lane, a cornerstone of local sports journalism and a beloved figure in the region. Lane passed away at the age of 85 at Homewood at Martinsburg, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades and countless memories for sports enthusiasts across Blair County.
A Career that Spanned Decades
Jim Lane’s journey with the Altoona Mirror began in 1960, marking the start of a career that would profoundly shape sports coverage in the area. “Growing up, I always looked forward to meeting Jim during our family tours of the Mirror,” recalled Mirror Publisher Dan Slep. “From our first meeting, he greeted us like family, always with a warm smile and a handshake. He was integral in building the sports department into what it is today.”
Lane’s early years in the newspaper featured a two-man sports department alongside Herb Werner before Frank Polito joined them. He eventually ascended to the role of sports editor in 1980, a position he held until his retirement in 2002, after which he continued contributing on a part-time basis for another two decades.
A Respected Figure in Sports
His influence extended beyond the office, as those he covered formed deep bonds with him. “Jim was well known and respected,” noted retired Bishop Guilfoyle football coach Tom Irwin. “He was not only a good friend; he made it a point to tell compelling, factual stories.” Lane’s column, aptly named “Down the Lane,” was a staple for readers eager to get the latest on local sports.
His coverage of Altoona Area High School sports is particularly noteworthy, shaping the memories of fans and players alike. Former AASD director for public relations, Tom Bradley, remarked, “For over 50 years, fans eagerly awaited Jim Lane’s account of the previous night’s games. Many of his articles are framed in homes across Altoona, a testament to his impact.”
A Mentorship that Lasted Generations
Lane’s legacy as a mentor is another key facet of his life’s work. As Sports Editor Buck Frank pointed out, Lane fostered an environment that allowed young reporters to grow. “He wasn’t just a leader; he was a friend and a guide,” Frank said, noting that he played a crucial role during a time when the newspaper industry was evolving dramatically.
Even after retirement, Lane’s dedication to mentoring aspiring journalists did not wane. His professionalism was evident, as many in the field grew to trust his judgment and wisdom. Dave Mackall, who transitioned from the Mirror to a long career in major publications, described him as “Mr. Altoona Mountain Lion,” emphasizing his warmth and caring nature.
A Family Legacy of Sports
Beyond his professional achievements, Lane was a dedicated family man. His children, Jeff and Jill, exemplify the values he instilled during their upbringing. Jill Lane recalls her father as her primary inspiration for her own love of sports. “He taught me to be fearless on the court regardless of my height,” she said, sharing how he never missed a game.
Jeff Lane has fond memories of attending press conferences and sharing those experiences with his father. “When you grow up in the shadow of someone as influential as he was, you can’t help but be inspired,” he noted, reflecting on the moments that shaped his own life.
A Legacy Honored
Jim Lane’s contributions to the local sports community did not go unnoticed. He was honored as the first Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. The Altoona Curve’s press box was named in his honor in 2002, a fitting tribute to a man who spent countless hours covering the team.
Lane’s annual Father’s Day column, written following the death of his father, has also become a cherished tradition in the Mirror, exemplifying the deep personal connections he fostered with his readers.
Farewell to a Community Legend
A testament to his character and legacy, a tribute dinner hosted for Lane upon his semi-retirement saw over 300 people in attendance. Family, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate a man who had become a pillar of the community.
Lane’s passing leaves a profound silence in the Altoona sports scene. His impact on local journalism and sportsmanship will be felt for generations to come. Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass to celebrate his life.
In a world that often underappreciates the quiet giants like Jim Lane, his story reminds us of the importance of community, mentorship, and the powerful role that local sports play in our lives.
