Austin Pets Alive! Responds to Winter Crisis
A Shining Example of Community Support
In Austin, Texas, an inspiring act of community compassion unfolded this week as Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) made headlines for successfully finding homes for hundreds of dogs ahead of an impending winter storm. Typically bustling with activity, the kennels saw an extraordinary outpouring of support, transforming into a quieter sanctuary for the animals just days before the arctic blast hit.
The Call for Fosters
Facing the threat of the severe cold, Austin Pets Alive! issued an urgent plea to Central Texans to foster 75 dogs. The response was overwhelming, with the community rallying together to double that initial goal. Allison Swearingen, the dog placement senior program manager at APA!, expressed her gratitude, noting, "Austin stepped up. We had hundreds of people come through our doors. We got over 200 dogs into foster in three and a half days, which is insane."
A Rare Breather for the Shelter
Thanks to the rapid foster placements, the kennels reported an astonishing reduction in population; only 18 dogs remained on-site compared to a standard 150. This unprecedented shift allowed staff to dedicate more resources and care to the remaining animals. Swearingen pointed out that with fewer dogs to care for, the staff could provide higher quality outings and individual attention. "Normally a crew of over 20 staff members and numerous volunteers are needed," she added. "With just five people on site, the care quality improved significantly."
Keeping the Dogs Safe and Warm
The remaining dogs were housed in heated kennels, complete with extra blankets and staff members they were familiar with. This environment not only ensured their comfort but also provided a sense of stability during an uncertain time.
Extending the Foster Arrangements
Initially, APA! asked fosters to keep the dogs through Wednesday, but as the cold weather lingered, they encouraged families to extend their stays or, ideally, consider making the arrangements permanent. This call to action highlights the shelter’s proactive approach to making long-lasting connections between families and furry companions.
Welcoming More Dogs to Safety
Looking to the future, APA! anticipates the arrival of additional dogs from three rural shelter partners. The recent surge in foster care has positioned them well to accommodate these new animals while still supporting their mission of saving lives. "Our supporters who have adopted or extended their fostering efforts are making a significant difference," Swearingen emphasized.
An Open Invitation to the Community
For those who couldn’t foster during the freeze, it’s not too late to get involved. APA! encourages individuals to visit their website to explore options for adopting or fostering a dog. With the recent success, the shelter remains committed to finding loving homes for its furry residents, ensuring that they continue to receive the care they deserve.
A Testament to Compassionate Leadership
The events of this week not only exemplify the strength of community spirit in Austin but also reflect the compassionate leadership at Austin Pets Alive! Their ability to mobilize resources and rally support in challenging times serves as an inspiring reminder of the impact of collective action for animal welfare. As winter weather continues to pose challenges, the organization stands resilient, advocating for the needs of every dog in their care.
