This pioneering study spearheaded by Joanna D’Elia, a nursing quality specialist, is one of the first to systematically investigate the potential benefits of companion robotic pets in dementia care.

Understanding the Challenge

For elderly patients grappling with dementia, a hospital setting can feel particularly disorienting and anxiety-inducing. Many patients may not fully comprehend their situation, making the flurry of medical staff and procedures even more unsettling. "It’s a scary place to be in the hospital," explains D’Elia.
