Celebrating Sixteen Candles: A Journey of Love and Understanding

The Significance of Sixteen

When we think of “Sweet Sixteen,” it’s easy for our minds to wander to the NCAA Men’s National Championship, Neil Sedaka’s 1983 hit song, or even the classic tune "Sixteen Candles" by The Crests. This year, however, for me, the term brings a deeply personal meaning as I pen my sixteenth newspaper column in March for the past sixteen years, affectionately titled "Sixteen Candles." This column isn’t just a nostalgic nod to a milestone; it’s a celebration of my granddaughter Maddox.

A Journey Begins

Maddox was born in January sixteen years ago in Alpena, Michigan, on a frigid, snowy day that remains vivid in my memory. It was that very night when we learned of her diagnosis—she was born with Down syndrome. Instead of the standard two copies of chromosome 21, Maddox has three. This fact gives a unique significance to March 21st, or 3-21, marking World Down Syndrome Day—a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the lives and accomplishments of those with this condition.

Milestones and Triumphs

Every child’s journey is filled with milestones, but for Maddox, each one holds monumental significance. Simple achievements like walking, talking, and learning to read or write are often taken for granted—yet for her, each was a mountain conquered. Maddox navigates through life, fully embracing the understanding that it isn’t a race; it’s a journey shaped by persistence and resilience.

Her journey started the day she was born, when doctors discovered two small holes in her heart. This revelation marked the beginning of a life filled with challenges, but Maddox’s spirit never flickered. She surpassed each hurdle with grace, as love enveloped her from her parents and family, helping her find the strength she needed.

A Passion for Learning

From an early age, Maddox exhibited an undeniable passion for learning. She began with simple sign language, gradually moving to shape recognition and eventually to mastering the alphabet. After years of speech and physical therapy, it became apparent that she was progressing in her own unique way. Each success, though perhaps not on what one might call a conventional timeline, was a testament to her determination.

Now, sixteen years later, Maddox is a vibrant teenager. She experiences all the typical teenage joys—boy crushes, school dances, experimenting with makeup, indulging in music, playing sports, and engaging in school activities. Her growth continues to inspire those around her.

A Community of Support

Maddox’s journey wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the myriad of people who stepped in to support her along the way. Her teachers displayed incredible patience, while her peers provided the understanding and camaraderie she needed. Therapists worked diligently with her, and of course, the unwavering love and support of her parents and two brothers have been critical.

I’ve had the privilege of witnessing every triumph and setback alongside her family. In truth, I’ve learned far more from Maddox than I could ever hope to teach her. She possesses an extraordinary ability to see beyond superficial differences—politics, race, gender, wealth, or religion mean little to her. Instead, she finds goodness in everyone and beauty in the world around her.

A Heart Larger than Life

Remember the two tiny holes in her heart? Those have blossomed into a compassionate and generous spirit. Maddox gives a piece of her heart to everyone she meets, spreading love and joy in ways we can all aspire to.

As we approach March 21st—World Down Syndrome Day—I invite everyone to join in the celebration by wearing mismatched or colorful socks. This symbol represents the 21st chromosomes and serves as a reminder of the beauty in diversity.
