Minot High Baseball: A Season of Transition and Opportunity

Minot High Baseball Team

The Minot High baseball team graduated 11 seniors from last year’s roster that advanced to the Class A state championship game. This year’s roster includes three seniors, four juniors, six sophomores, and one freshman. Mike Kraft/MDN.

Minot High School’s baseball program is set to embark on a new chapter this season, contending with substantial roster changes after the graduation of 11 seniors. The previous year’s remarkable journey, culminating in an appearance at the Class A state championship game, leaves towering shoes to fill on the diamond.

Replacing a Legacy

Last season’s standout players, Kellan Burke and Carson Deaver, epitomized the talent and leadership that Minot’s baseball team has celebrated. Burke, having earned the title of the 2024-25 Gatorade North Dakota Baseball Player of the Year, boasted impressive statistics, including a .547 batting average with 42 hits and a staggering 32 RBIs. He was not just a powerhouse at the plate but also exhibited remarkable consistency, striking out only three times in 128 plate appearances.

On the mound, Deaver showcased exceptional skills, pitching 52.2 innings with a remarkable 1.19 ERA. His 68 strikeouts contributed significantly to the team’s defensive prowess. Coach Pete Stenberg acknowledges the challenges of filling these gaps: “They are hard to replace. We just have to see if we can get someone or maybe more than one person who wants to step up and start filling those roles.”

A New Era of Leadership

The loss of seasoned players includes not only Burke and Deaver but also standout Teegan Strand, an all-WDA honoree. With a mix of experience and youth, the focus now shifts to emerging leaders. Tegan Schindler is the solitary senior with prior varsity experience, stepping up to mentor newer players. Schindler’s stats from last season—.261 batting average with significant contributions in RBIs—set a solid example of striving for excellence.

Fellow seniors Evan Racine and Peyton House are poised to make their varsity debuts, adding fresh perspectives while learning the nuances of high school baseball.

The Fresh Faces

This year’s roster is blooming with potential. Junior Gavin King emphasizes the opportunity at hand: “We lost a lot of seniors last year, but we have a lot of new guys that can step up and step into some big spots.” Highlighting the team’s depth, King joins a mixed squad of juniors and sophomores ready to rise to the occasion.

Among them is sophomore Oliver Deschamp, who transitioned from backup catcher to this year’s starter. With a .324 batting average last season, his performance speaks volumes about what’s to come. The newcomers include freshman Carter Bush and sophomores Cole Deaver and Grady Weppler, adding to the existing pool of talent and potential.

An Encouraging Environment

Though it’s a transition year, there are positive benchmarks to consider. Various sports teams at Minot High have shown that roster turnover doesn’t necessarily equate to a rebuilding season. The tennis team, for instance, lost five key players but still secured a commendable third place in the WDA standings. Similarly, both the soccer and hockey teams have navigated notable changes while achieving success.

Stenberg remains optimistic about the team’s pitching and defensive strengths. Drawing from last year’s successes, which included 17 games in which opponents were held to two runs or fewer, he anticipates a competitive start to the season. “We’re going to be fairly solid on the mound,” he reassures, indicating a preparedness that bodes well for their season opener.

Looking Ahead

The coaches’ poll anticipates Minot High starting in the middle tier of the WDA standings, a vantage point they aim to elevate from as the season progresses. Bismarck Legacy leads the pack in predictions, but the competitive nature of the WDA means surprises are part and parcel of the game. Stenberg emphasizes, “You could be the No. 1 seed with two weeks left in the season and you could end up at No. 4.”

As Minot High gears up for its season kickoff against Williston on March 27, the blend of experience and fresh talent presents a tantalizing prospect. The pressures of expectations loom large, but so too does the excitement of potential and growth as a cohesive unit.

Anticipating a reinvention, Minot High’s baseball team often reflects on key fundamentals and the determination to achieve success through diligence and teamwork. With aspirations to reclaim their spot at the top, this season promises to be a heartfelt journey of perseverance, ambition, and unwavering dedication to the game.
