Attention Gamers: ASU Hosts an Exciting Tournament This Spring Semester!

ASU Combine: Where Student Gamers Unite

It’s an exciting time for student gamers at Arizona State University (ASU). Imagine a university-wide battle where teamwork, quick thinking, and strategic prowess take center stage. The twist? A light-up keyboard is entirely optional. Welcome to the ASU Combine, a video game tournament hosted in collaboration with the Ultimate Endgamers League (UEL), the world’s first multi-genre esports league.

The Tournament Unveiled

The ASU Combine isn’t just another gaming tournament; it’s a chance for students to showcase their skills across more than 40 video games throughout the spring 2026 semester. With the potential to earn leaderboard points and compete for scholarship prizes, this competition promises a thrilling experience for all participants.

Connor Rawls, the lead staff member for the ASU Esports Lounge in The GAME School, highlights the tournament’s uniqueness, noting that this is the first time UEL has partnered with a university. This partnership provides ASU students with a rare opportunity: outstanding performers could even be considered for professional contracts with the league.

A Commitment to Gaming

The ASU Combine is just one example of the university’s commitment to the burgeoning video game industry. Earlier this year, ASU introduced its game design degree, allowing students to turn their passion for gaming into academic and professional pursuits. According to a recent report from Newzoo, the gaming industry is booming, generating an estimated $187.7 billion in 2024. It’s clear that the university recognizes the importance of this growth and aims to position its students at the forefront.

Building a Community

Rawls emphasizes that the ASU Combine is not just about competition. It serves as a bridge connecting students from different majors, backgrounds, and locations. To enhance this sense of community, a Discord server has been established. “We’re really operating from a ‘one-campus’ mentality,” Rawls explains. “Wherever you happen to be, we’re all competing and having a good time here together.”

Interestingly, while students will indeed be competing against one another, many of the qualifying games require teamwork. Rawls highlights the essence of collaboration: “If you and a partner go on a crazy win streak, you both succeed.”

Key Dates and Participation

The tournament kicks off on December 1, but students can join anytime after that date. All ASU students in good academic standing are eligible to compete, with a modest $20 monthly fee to participate.

To earn points, players must submit screenshots of their “player cards” from the qualifying games every two weeks. This system encourages participation in their free time while providing a clear method for tracking progress. At the end of each two-week period, participants will be ranked on a leaderboard based on their accumulated points.

Competing for Scholarships

As the spring semester progresses, the excitement builds towards the championship tournament. The top players based on leaderboard points will compete for a scholarship prize pool currently set at $10,000. If participation surpasses 500 students, that prize pool is poised to double, further motivating gamers to polish their skills and bring their A-game to the tournament.

Skills Beyond Gaming

While the thrill of competition is evident, Rawls stresses that the ASU Combine serves a greater purpose: personal development. “Being good at just one game won’t win you any prizes,” he explains. Participants will encounter various skill sets across different formats. Some games focus on teamwork and communication under pressure, while others challenge long-term strategic planning or technical expertise. The most successful players will leverage a combination of hard and soft skills tailored to different genres.

Mill Ave., Tempe, the lounge operates from noon to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, providing a welcoming space to hone your gaming skills.

Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or just starting, the ASU Combine promises an engaging and rewarding experience that celebrates competition, teamwork, and community. Are you ready to join the ranks of ASU’s gamer elite?
