Laura Mischke, head of Adult Services at the Bellevue Public Library, has a personal connection to the importance of microchips. When her dog, Darwin, go lost, it was the microchip that brought him safely back home. “I was contacted at work by a vet who said he had your dog, and it was because of a microchip, so it does work,” she shared, demonstrating how crucial this small but significant device can be in reuniting pets and their families.
Microchips, which contain a unique identification number, are embedded under a pet’s skin. If the pet goes missing and is found, a quick scan can lead to the owner’s information being retrieved, thus facilitating a swift reunion.

Mischke noted that many residents have expressed concern over lost pets, frequently posting on social media in hopes of locating them. Using the library’s microchip scanners is straightforward and user-friendly. Individuals who own a valid Bellevue library card can check out the scanners for home use. Simply press the power button on the scanner, and it’s ready to start scanning for microchips.
For those without a library card, don’t fret! You can still ensure the safety of a lost pet. Simply bring the animal to the library, where staff members will scan for a microchip on-site, assisting in the reunion process.
