The family and friends of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu have recently announced the cancellation of all previously planned burial rites.
Akinnaanu tragically passed away on January 12, following a prolonged battle with a severe leg ailment, which she openly shared with her fans and supporters. The news of her passing sent ripples of sorrow throughout the gospel community and among countless music lovers who admired her soulful voice and powerful messages.
For months before her death, Akinnaanu had earnestly appealed for prayers and healing, garnering widespread empathy from fans who were touched by her vulnerability and perseverance. Her struggle was not just a personal fight but a journey that resonated with many who faced their own battles.
In the wake of her passing, there were initial arrangements circulated via fellow gospel artist Alayo Melody, which outlined a comprehensive multi-day schedule to honor her life and legacy. This included a service of songs, a candlelight procession, and a tribute night on January 20 at the LTV 8 ground in Ikeja, Lagos. A private interment service was also set for January 21.
However, the plans have now been formally called off, leading to confusion and sadness among those who were eager to pay their respects. In a video posted on Instagram, Lanre Alewilese, a colleague of the late singer, shared the news, explaining that the decision was driven by an “internal crisis” within Akinnaanu’s family, a revelation that has left many perplexed and concerned.
In the video, it was emphasized that all arrangements have been “CANCELLED totally” and that the family will communicate a new date at a later time, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty.
“This is to inform you that all plans & arrangements for the burial of our Late Sister & Colleague; *Lady Evang. Bunmi Akinnaanu a.k.a. OMIJE OJUMI by the Burial Planning Committee has been CANCELLED totally,” the post reads.
“This decision becomes necessary due to some issues arising from & within her family.
“We are deeply sorry & regret the inconveniences sir/ma.”
Bunmi Akinnaanu began her musical journey at the tender age of 10, showcasing a talent that would later blossom into a full-fledged career. Before fully immersing herself in music, she worked in the banking sector, demonstrating a remarkable transition from finance to the arts, which speaks volumes about her dedication and passion for music.
