Norfolk has become a favored escape for families looking for a delightful mix of seaside fun, nature, and adventure. After several years of holidaying in the UK, my recent trip to Norfolk underscored its appeal as a perfect family holiday destination.
A Magical Playground Experience
Imagine the joy on your children’s faces as they sprint towards a massive woodland playground, filled with castle-like forts, expansive sand pits, thrilling zip lines, and a water tower. The excitement is palpable—this isn’t just any playground; it boasts a royal endorsement. Situated within the stunning Sandringham Estate, the Woodland Playground is part of the rural retreat favored by the Royal Family for over 150 years.
One of the best parts? Entrance is free! Visitors only need to cover the cost of parking, which feels like a steal for a venue offering such fantastic facilities. With 20,000 acres of beautifully maintained grounds, families can also enjoy picturesque woodland walks and bike rides, accessible throughout the year.
Perfect Weather and Ideal Location
During my family’s visit this summer, we were doubly blessed—great weather amidst a delightful heatwave and a well-positioned holiday cottage through Norfolk Hideaways. Our accommodation in Tattersett facilitated easy access to family-friendly activities, both inland and seaside. After an energetic session at the Woodland Playground, we relaxed over delightful snacks and ice cream at the estate’s cozy coffee shop.
A Treasure Trove of Kid-Friendly Activities
Norfolk is a treasure trove for family activities, many of which don’t cost a penny. The region boasts numerous breathtaking beaches, each with its own unique charm.

Hunstanton: This traditional seaside resort is brimming with attractions like funfairs and classic British fish and chips. Nearby Old Hunstanton boasts a stunning sand stretch ideal for spotting starfish and crabs during low tide.

There’s more to Norfolk than just its beaches. Close to our cottage, we discovered Pensthorpe Nature Reserve in Fakenham. Known for its beautiful gardens and fun activities, it features an outdoor play area and an indoor play barn, making it a hit with kids. The gardens are immaculately kept, with amusing activities like the ‘poo trail’ that kids find hilariously entertaining.
Accommodations: Home Away From Home
We opted for a self-catering cottage during our stay, as it provided the necessary space for the kids to play and for the family to wind down together. Our lovely Mallard Cottage was well-equipped with a kitchen and ample living areas, suiting our needs perfectly.

Getting There: The Journey
While Norfolk’s beauty and activities shine, it’s worth mentioning that reaching this lovely county can be tricky, as it lacks a motorway. The journey from the north-west typically involves traveling via the A50 through Stoke and Derby, eventually leading you to the coast. Expect a drive of about three and a half to four hours from Manchester, which can be longer depending on actual driving conditions.
If you prefer public transport, your best bet is to take a train to Kings Lynn, with services that connect through Ely. The Coastliner bus (the 36) operates across the region, making stops at all the lovely villages mentioned above.
With its enchanting blend of natural beauty, ample activities for families, and cozy accommodations, Norfolk stands out as an excellent choice for a family holiday.
