Exploring AI’s Role in Daily Life: A Personal Journey with Technology
My husband was an early adopter of AI assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini when they surged in popularity a few years back. His enthusiasm often led to some lighthearted moments, particularly during our adventure into parenthood. Last year, while I was pregnant, he sought assistance from ChatGPT to find the perfect baby name. One of the suggestions that raised eyebrows and giggles was “Shlomo Giuseppe,” reflecting our mixed heritage. Although it made us laugh, we eventually chose a different name for our son.
A Skeptical Perspective on AI in Journalism
Conversely, I have generally approached AI tools with caution. My career as the deputy editor of the flagship daily public affairs show, “Sound of Ideas,” coupled with my role as an adjunct professor of journalism at Baldwin Wallace University, instills a deep-seated wariness about the implications of AI on the workforce and educational development.
The journalism industry has been experiencing job losses for years, pressured by competition from major tech companies vying for ad revenue and viewership. Comparing the current landscape to a decade ago, I am alarmed by stories of news outlets like Sports Illustrated employing AI to generate articles. This signals another potential upheaval that our industry may need to navigate.
AI’s Infiltration in Academia
Anecdotally, I’ve witnessed a notable increase in AI usage among my students. Some assignments have come back with AI-generated prompts left intact, while one student confessed to using the technology when I found references in his article that didn’t exist. Such instances highlight a burgeoning trend that raises serious questions about integrity and the learning process in academia.
A Surprising Solution with AI
Recently, I found myself reconsidering my stance when a dispute arose between my husband and me concerning a night when his car failed to start. It was late, and I was reluctant to wake our 10-month-old son—who, by the way, is not named Shlomo Giuseppe—for an inconvenient ride to rescue him. While I had my reasons, my husband felt frustrated by my refusal.
After resolving the situation through friends who helped him, my husband turned to Google Gemini the next day, seeking insight into our argument. To my surprise, Gemini provided a balanced interpretation that captured both our perspectives. It was akin to having an impartial mediator.
Understanding Each Other Through AI Mediation
While Gemini ultimately classified the disagreement as a verdict—declaring my husband “60% right” to my “40%” correctness—the third-party feedback facilitated a richer understanding between us. It highlighted my lack of empathy in failing to initially consider his predicament, prompting me to acknowledge his feelings. Although not a traditional dispute resolution, this AI-informed approach acted as a bridge between our differing viewpoints, fostering empathy and progress.

In our week-long newsroom-wide project, "Ideastream Explores: Artificial Intelligence," we delved into the multifaceted ways AI is shaping lives in Northeast Ohio. Discussions have spanned various fields—from the arts and journalism to housing, policing, and mental health. One segment on AI’s role in relationships resonated strongly, emphasizing its proximity to my own life experiences.
As the discussion around AI unfolds, many of us grapple with simultaneous feelings of intrigue and caution. How will AI impact education, the environment, and employment? As we navigate this ever-evolving landscape, it’s essential to share experiences to better understand the implications of AI on every facet of our lives.
