The Unsung Heroes of Mental Health: Our Pets
October is renowned as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but it also holds the lesser-known distinction of being National Mental Health Awareness Month. While discussions often center around human relationships and therapies, we often overlook the contributions of our furry companions—our pets.
How Pets Improve Mental Health
In recent years, I’ve come to truly appreciate just how vital pets can be for our mental well-being. Picture this: you’re sitting in an airport, feeling the weight of anxiety as you wait for your flight. Suddenly, a friendly dog strolls by, its tail wagging and eyes sparkling. You can’t help but crack a smile. This unanticipated moment of joy can be exactly what you need to shift your mood and calm your nerves.
Working closely with DLH Consulting and Psychiatric Services in Dartmouth has reinforced this idea for me. Recently, during one of their visits to my studio, I was greeted by two remarkable dogs that have been trained as therapeutic animals. Instantly, their warm and calming presence lifted my spirits and reminded me of the incredible influence pets can have on mental health.
Therapy Animals in Unlikely Places
Think about the places where you encounter pets unexpectedly: at your workplace, your therapist’s office, or even the local airport. These encounters serve as gentle reminders to take a moment to breathe. Every time I see a pet, whether it’s a dog or a cat, I find myself smiling or even exclaiming, “How cute!”
For instance, Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport has embraced the calming power of therapy animals, recognizing that travel can often be a source of anxiety for many. Recently, dogs parading in Halloween costumes made their way through the terminals, actively engaging with travelers and providing a much-needed source of comfort and joy amidst the chaos.
These furry friends have a unique way of making us pause and reminding us to appreciate the small joys in life. They offer companionship, decrease feelings of loneliness, and promote a sense of responsibility—all of which significantly contribute to our overall mental well-being.
Why You Should Check In With Yourself This October
As we navigate through this month, take a moment to check in with yourself and your mental health. It’s a time to reflect on our emotional states and remind ourselves that it’s okay to seek help when needed. A simple encounter with a delightful animal can serve as a reminder to be kind to yourself and engage in daily practices that promote mental health.
If you’re curious to meet the two wonderful therapeutic dogs I mentioned earlier, I highly encourage you to visit DLH Consulting in Dartmouth. This October, let’s also support one another in recognizing the importance of mental health—both our own and that of those around us.
