I Joined an Upper-Middle-Class Family—Here Are 7 Unspoken Rules I Had to Discover the Hard Way – VegOut

Published:

We tend to think we are just marrying one person, then the first holiday dinner happens, and you realize you also married into a whole ecosystem of habits, expectations, and unspoken rules. Navigating this landscape can feel like stepping into a new culture where the rules are subtly different, often unspoken. My partner grew up in an upper-middle-class family, whereas I did not.

Coming from a “use it till it breaks” background where money was tight, leftovers were gold, and aesthetics took a backseat, I found myself in a world filled with catered parties, legacy schools, and “casual” outfits that cost more than my monthly rent. It was a crash course in a different culture, and I had to learn the unspoken rules of this new space—often through discomfort. Here are seven key lessons that emerged from my journey, shedding light on class, identity, and the importance of staying true to oneself.

1) Appearances Come Before Comfort

The first time I visited their home, I mistakenly arrived in my trail-running clothes, having come straight from a muddy path. I was in a hoodie and sneakers that had definitely seen better days while everyone else was in what they considered “just something casual”—think pressed chinos and tasteful jewelry. No one said a word, but I could feel the weight of their gazes. The brief glances and polite comments like, “You must have had a busy morning,” spoke volumes.

I slowly realized that for many upper-middle-class families, appearances serve as a crucial form of communication, signaling values like control, refinement, and success. This emphasis on looking “put together” is often rooted in a desire for safety and belonging—a shield against potential judgment from peers. To adapt, I created a “visiting the in-laws” uniform that felt like me: simple, clean lines that are intentional but not flashy.

2) Money is Rarely Talked About Directly

As a former financial analyst, I’m at ease discussing numbers—APRs, budgets, and compound interest are all in my wheelhouse. But during an early discussion about kitchen renovations, I made the mistake of directly inquiring about costs. The sudden silence and quick evasive remarks about the weather taught me an important lesson; in this world, money looms large yet is rarely explicitly named. Reflecting on financial matters often feels crass, tied closely to one’s self-worth and identity.

After many awkward moments, I learned to pivot conversations from hard numbers to underlying values. Instead of asking, “How much did this cost?” I would inquire, “What made you choose this over other options?” This approach allowed me to satisfy my curiosity while navigating the intricacies of their social fabric.

3) Food is Part of Social Status, Not Just Fuel

Food is already a loaded subject for me as a vegan. At the first family dinner, I encountered a table laden with extravagant dishes—a roast, gourmet cheeses, lavish desserts. Someone enthusiastically declared they had made my “favorites,” but none were things I could enjoy. I felt an immediate sense of disconnection, as if I had unintentionally broken a rule. My simple lentil dish, which I had thought would be a backup, suddenly felt inadequate.

In this environment, food acts as a social performance; the choices one makes regarding dining can signal inclusion, identity, and care. I later realized the need for proactive communication. Now, I express my appreciation for their efforts and let them know I’ll bring backup dishes for sharing. This approach reinforces shared enjoyment rather than my dietary choices being a rejection.

4) Networking is an Olympic Sport

“Come say hello, I want you to meet someone,” became the refrain at every gathering. Initially, I assumed such introductions were merely polite gestures, but I soon recognized their strategic nature. In upper-middle-class circles, relationships serve as currency—networking is an integral aspect of social gatherings. For someone who favors authenticity, the whole setup can feel transactional.

However, I came to understand this as a form of care. Helping each other advance in careers is an expression of loyalty and concern. The challenge lies in not allowing every interaction to feel like a pitch. I’ve shifted my approach to view each conversation as an opportunity for genuine curiosity rather than an avenue to achieve. If opportunities arise, great; if not, I’ve still engaged in meaningful interactions.

5) Conflict is Handled Indirectly

In my family, if someone is upset, you hear about it, sometimes loudly. In my partner’s family, however, conflict rarely emerges overtly. Instead, it’s communicated through subtle shifts—politeness that becomes slightly colder or invitations that feel more restrained. I learned this the hard way when I brought up a polarizing political topic at dinner, only to witness the atmosphere stiffen before the conversation swiftly turned to lighter subjects.

I later discovered I had crossed an invisible boundary by introducing open conflict into a space where maintaining harmony is paramount. To navigate this, I’ve learned to save significant conversations for one-on-one settings. If tensions arise, I try gently asking if I misread the room, which helps maintain a sense of ease while allowing frank discussions when necessary.

6) Gift Giving Has an Invisible Price Floor

“In some families, gifts express love; in others, they also express class.” My first birthday with my in-laws was a lesson in this disparity. I had brought a thoughtful but modest gift for a relative, while others opened lavish presents—designer items, expensive electronics, and extravagant experiences. While my gift was appreciated, I sensed it fell short of the “norm.”

This experience taught me about the unspoken price floor in gift-giving. Guilt can creep in if your gifts are viewed as less valuable, leaving you feeling “cheap.” To ground myself, I focus on thoughtfulness, sustainability, and practicality, offering handmade items or meaningful experiences instead. If someone measures affection in monetary value, that story belongs to them, not me.

7) Achievement is the Default Setting

In this new world, everyone seems to be achieving something—launching projects, leading initiatives, and constantly improving. While I initially admired this drive, it soon spiraled into a silent comparison against an invisible scoreboard. Questions about my own success, career prominence, and accomplishments became prevalent, making me question my worth.

This relentless achievement culture can easily morph into a self-worth culture. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to equate your value with your output. Fortunately, my personal values saved me. Focusing on meaningful lifestyle choices—being vegan, volunteering, and pursuing hobbies—reminds me that fulfillment extends beyond accolades. When these conversations swirl around success, I now suggest alternative metrics for evaluation, asking questions that invite reflection on inner peace and personal pride beyond a résumé.

Ultimately, marrying into a different class background resembles moving to a new country without a guidebook. You learn the nuanced rules through experience, often facing discomfort. Yet within the awkwardness lies an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. This process allows you to analyze your habits and values, deciding which aspects of this new culture to adopt and which to leave behind.

If you find yourself navigating a similar dynamic, remember: You must learn the language of your surroundings, discerning when to embrace it and when to assert your own voice. Just as in any negotiation, the goal is to cultivate understanding while holding onto your identity at the same time.
