I Made History as the First Woman to Present Sports News on the BBC

Published:

The Pioneering Journey of Sally Jones in Sports Journalism

In 1986, a significant milestone was achieved in the world of sports journalism when Sally Jones became the first woman to present sports news on the BBC’s Breakfast Time. This moment was not just a personal victory for Jones; it represented a broader shift towards gender equality in broadcasting and sports media.

A Background Drenched in Sports

Born in Coventry in 1954, Sally Jones was raised in a family that encouraged her active lifestyle. Growing up near the Memorial Park, where she spent countless hours, her early experiences with sports shaped her identity. As she recounted, she played squash, tennis, and even took up real tennis in her late 20s. Her athletic abilities were recognized early on; during her years at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, she garnered five Blues and half Blues, a testament to her prowess in various sports, including netball, cricket, tennis, and modern pentathlon.

From Trainee Journalist to Groundbreaker

Jones’ journey into journalism began when she joined the BBC as a trainee journalist. After a brief stint in commercial television, she returned to the BBC in 1986, joining renowned figures like Frank Bough, Sally Magnusson, and Jeremy Paxman in a relaunch of Breakfast Time. Making history as the first female presenter of sports news at the BBC, Jones faced the significant challenge of breaking through a male-dominated sphere, bringing with her not only personal passion but also encyclopedic knowledge of the sports she covered.

Battling Prejudice and Stereotypes

Despite her undeniable credentials, Jones encountered sexism and prejudice from those who believed a woman should not be front and center discussing sports like football and rugby. She recalled, “In those days, there was also a kind of looks-ism going on as well." Facing comments about her appearance and suggestions to lose weight—despite being a size 12 and nearly six feet tall—she learned to develop a thick skin, stating, “You do get a skin like a rhinoceros.” This resilience not only marked her character but also paved the way for future generations of women in sports journalism.

The Weight of Scrutiny

Sally Jones’ experiences with sexism within broadcasting resonate today. She noted that older attitudes still linger among some audiences, where female presenters face disproportionate scrutiny. “If you’re a woman and mess up, people would line up to pour scorn on us,” she said, referencing how male colleagues might be given the benefit of a bad day when making mistakes. This discrepancy made her achievements even more significant, as Jones battled not only to bring sports news to the public but also to redefine how women journalists were perceived.

A Legacy Beyond the Screen

While Sally Jones is no longer a regular face on television, she remains intricately connected to sports and journalism. Working as a media trainer for sports organizations, she combines her expertise and love for sports to guide emerging talents. Active in real tennis, a sport she loves, she won her first world title at age 38 in the championships held in Bordeaux. Reflecting on that achievement, she said, “I just thought I might as well go for it and I won in three very close sets.”

Jones believes that the strategic nature of real tennis keeps her motivated; it showcases her capability to compete against younger athletes who may rely solely on physical prowess. She emphasizes that age should not be a barrier to competitive success in the sport.

Breaking Free from Traditional Expectations

Jones often expresses gratitude for her journey, reflecting on how her parents allowed her freedom in choosing her career. While her father suggested she consider working at a local bank at 16, she knew that a traditional job would not suit her. “It would have driven me out of my tree within about three weeks,” she remarked, demonstrating her steadfast resolve to carve her own path away from conventional jobs.

Through her pioneering role, Sally Jones not only shattered a crucial glass ceiling in sports journalism but also paved the way for future generations of women in the field. Her story is one of resilience and passion, and it continues to inspire many aspiring journalists and sports enthusiasts today.
