Just as Aintzane settled into motherhood, her father, Toby Alt, 53, suffered a medical crisis while trying to relieve some heartburn. “All of a sudden, he just falls to the ground,” Aintzane recalled. The sight was horrifying; moments later, about 20 hospital staff members flooded her room to perform CPR on her father, essentially resurrecting him from what appeared to be a fatal episode.
Emergency responders were quick, efficiently employing a defibrillator to shock Toby’s heart back into rhythm. Within minutes, a situation that could have ended in tragedy transformed into a testament of modern medicine’s capabilities. “My dad is dead,” Aintzane described her immediate thoughts during this chaotic time.
The Quick Response of Medical Professionals
Derek McLeod, an emergency room registered nurse, recognized the grave seriousness of the situation. He theorized that if Toby hadn’t been in the hospital at that critical moment, he might not have survived. The swift actions of the medical team—a coordinated blend of CPR and defibrillation—were crucial in saving Toby’s life.
Following his revival, Toby was airlifted to Ogden Regional Medical Center where a pacemaker was implanted to stabilize his heart, which was reportedly functioning at only 20% capacity at the time of the incident. McLeod expressed how personal this event felt; being a grandfather himself, he couldn’t fathom the impact of losing the opportunity to watch his family grow.

Valerie Aguirre Alt, Toby’s wife, couldn’t contain her gratitude. “We’re very blessed that it happened right here because they saved her grandpa’s life,” she reflected, emphasizing the importance of having medical professionals on hand during such a critical time. While the family dealt with the emotional rollercoaster of having a newborn and facing a medical emergency, there was also a deep sense of gratitude for the timely intervention that saved Toby’s life.
