Loft Featured in Philadelphia, Starring Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas, Gets a Major Makeover

The Transformation of Philadelphia’s Iconic Loft

A Timeless Landmark

Thirty years after it served as the backdrop for the Oscar-winning film Philadelphia, the iconic loft that housed the characters played by Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas has undergone yet another transformation. Nestled within a historic cigar factory, this loft stands as a testament to both architectural heritage and modern design, having been revived by the creative minds at Velocette Studio. With its original wooden structure, exposed brick walls, and soaring ceilings, the loft marries the past with contemporary living.

A New Chapter

More than a decade ago, Sam Mink and Anthony Padilla moved into this unique space, which was once part of a factory that made cigars. Over time, they expanded their living area by acquiring an adjacent apartment, culminating in an impressive 300 square meters of living space. As their lifestyle evolved, the couple recognized the need for an extensive renovation. Their aim was clear: preserve the building’s character while infusing it with a modern aesthetic reflective of their shared experiences.

Visionary Design

The renovation kicked off with a poignant phrase written by designer Hope Velocette during her initial visit to the loft: “Reach new heights without moving.” This sentiment encapsulated the emotional core of the project. Velocette vividly recalls, “I sat, looking up at the original ceiling, over five meters high, and listening to the clients talk about their lives here.” Inspired by their stories, the design sought to celebrate the loft’s extensive history while fostering a sense of transformation and renewal.

Structural Enhancements

Velocette Studio proposed a comprehensive reconfiguration of the space, accentuating its historic roots. They took meticulous care to restore the factory’s wooden ceilings while exposing the original brick walls, which they painted a warm white to enhance the loft’s inviting atmosphere. Through thoughtful demolition of partitions, the layout evolved into a longitudinal design that separates the expansive common areas from private spaces, thoughtfully accommodating modern living.

Elevating Space and Light

In the redesigned living area, the verticality is emphasized through elements that draw the eye upward. A striking full-height lattice of green slats replaces traditional railings in the upper hallway, creating a visually dynamic separation that projects light and shadow across the walls. Combined with suspended light fixtures and textured treatments, these features lend an ethereal quality to the space while honoring its rustic origins.

A Cozy Living Space

The living room stands as a centerpiece of comfort and style, dominated by a plush orange-red velvet sofa and a floral-upholstered armchair. Rounded shapes and tactile elements soften the overall flow, complemented by a jute rug that adds natural texture. A backlit mirror introduces a vertical artistic element, enhancing the warmth of the space.

The Heart of the Home

At the center of the loft, the kitchen serves as the home’s heart. A grand island featuring a custom Calacatta Viola marble countertop and solid brass hardware anchors the room, making it a hub for family life. Velocette explains, “Every room looks out toward the island; it’s where family life pulses.” Local Philadelphia artisans collaborated to create furniture, including wooden benches and banquettes that enhance the kitchen’s inviting feel.

Dining and Details

The dining area is completed with an oak table designed by Velocette Studio, adorned with a beautiful floral wall installation and a mirror finished in watercolor that creates a serene, cloudy effect when illuminated. These organic elements and handcrafted details are woven into the fabric of the home, reinforcing its artisanal character.

Thoughtful Bathrooms

Attention to detail extends into the bathrooms as well. The guest bathroom boasts a monolithic marble sink with peach, grey, and black veining, accompanied by handcrafted terracotta tiles and Venetian stucco walls. The main bathroom adopts a more subdued aesthetic, featuring a terrazzo floor in earthy tones, complemented by black fixtures, brass accents, and a striking freestanding volcanic rock bathtub.

A Tranquil Retreat

Ascending to the main bedroom, the design embraces tranquility. An earthy palette and a custom-made headboard create a soothing environment, while built-in wardrobes with mirrored doors increase the sense of spaciousness. An inviting armchair paired with warm textiles encourages moments of respite and relaxation.

Forward-Thinking Design

The finished loft stands as a perfect blend of past, present, and future, artfully honoring its cinematic heritage while evolving into a home that meets modern needs. From its elegant design choices to its artisanal craftsmanship, this transformed space is not only a nod to its history but also a celebration of new beginnings, reflecting the dynamic spirit of Philadelphia. Velocette Studio’s meticulous approach has allowed this iconic loft to continue inspiring and crafting memories for years to come.
