Museveni Encourages Graduates to Embrace Healthy Lifestyles and Foster Family Prosperity

Museveni’s Message to Graduates: Embrace Health and Wealth Building

In a spirited address delivered at Kampala International University’s 32nd graduation ceremony, President Yoweri Museveni underscored the importance of healthy living and financial responsibility for the fresh graduates. This significant event, held in Ishaka, witnessed the graduation of 2,385 students across various academic programs, ranging from Bachelor’s and Diploma to Master’s and PhDs.

A Call for Healthy Lifestyles

In his message, read by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Museveni emphasized the necessity for students to maintain healthy lifestyles. "If you want to be patriotic and your family and country depend on you, you cannot be promiscuous; you cannot drink alcohol," he stated frankly. His insistence on abstaining from alcohol and other detrimental habits resonated throughout the ceremony, marking a pivotal moment for the newly minted graduates as they prepare to enter the workforce and contribute to society.

Building Wealth for Families

The President went beyond merely advocating for health; he called on graduates to focus on building wealth for their families. This message is vital, particularly in a time when financial literacy and familial support can significantly impact economic stability. Museveni urged the graduands to take an active role in enhancing the financial conditions of their households, suggesting that such responsibility is both a personal and patriotic duty.

Nurturing Spirituality

Recognizing the multifaceted nature of personal growth, Museveni also encouraged graduates to cultivate their spirituality by engaging with religious texts, recommending both the Bible and the Quran. This advice reflects a holistic approach to education, merging academic achievement with spiritual and moral grounding. The emphasis on spirituality suggests that intellectual development alone is insufficient; a balance of mind, body, and spirit is essential for true success.

The Importance of Character

In his address, Deputy Speaker Tayebwa complemented the President’s message by delving into the significance of character. He reminded the graduating class that having a degree is not the sole determinant of success. "You will succeed because of your character, your effort, your big dreams, and your determination—not just connections," he explained. This perspective challenges the traditional notion that credentials alone can pave the way to success, highlighting that integrity and ambition are equally, if not more, important.

Advocating for Education Reform

Amidst the celebrations, Hassan Basajjabalaba, chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees, made a compelling case for educational reform. He urged the Government to consider legislative changes such as tax exemptions for essential laboratory materials used by private universities. Furthermore, he called for a review of the student loan scheme, stressing the need for increased funding for research initiatives. This advocacy not only highlights the challenges faced by educational institutions but also emphasizes the importance of continual investment in higher education.

Celebrating Academic Achievements

The graduation ceremony itself marked a significant milestone in KIU’s academic journey, celebrating the achievements of 2,385 graduates. Each student’s achievement serves as a reminder of the hard work and perseverance required to attain higher education in today’s challenging environment. As these graduates prepare to embark on their professional journeys, they carry with them not only their degrees but also the collective guidance and expectations of their leaders.

Through the messages delivered during this event, the graduates have been presented with a roadmap not just for academic success but for a balanced life that prioritizes health, wealth, and character as they step into a new chapter.
