The Call for Digital Skill Acquisition
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the guest lecturer, passionately advocated for the necessity of Nigerians—especially the youth—to develop digital skills. He emphasized that in order to thrive within an increasingly competitive global economy, mastering technologies such as blockchain, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cyber security is imperative. This assertion highlights a fundamental shift in the types of skills that are now essential for career success.
Bamidele remarked, “The emergence of the digital economy, new technologies, and digital skills drive global economies.” His comments underscore the pivot towards a digitally-oriented workforce and the urgent need for Nigerian youth to place themselves in a position to leverage such tools for economic advancement.
The Role of Government and Policy Adjustments
The context in which this lecture occurred is crucial, as Bamidele pointed to systemic changes necessary from the government. He stated that expecting governments to provide traditional white-collar jobs for every graduate is unrealistic, given the current economic landscape. Recent legislative efforts, including the proposed Nigeria Data Protection Commission Act, 2025, demonstrate the government’s commitment to adapting to the evolving digital environment.
