Marvel fans have plenty to look forward to in the gaming world this year, with exciting releases like the highly anticipated Wolverine game from Insomniac, the all-new Marvel Super Heroes set for Magic: The Gathering, and the intriguing yet enigmatic Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Among these releases, the upcoming upgrade to one of Marvel’s most beloved games is generating a buzz, and we finally have some exciting details to share about it.
Since its initial launch in 2012, Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game has established itself as a top choice for Marvel gaming enthusiasts, consistently integrating new heroes, villains, and enhancements. After years of speculation regarding a substantial update, Upper Deck has announced the impending release of Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game Second Edition. Scheduled to debut later this year, this update is sure to excite longtime fans and new players alike.

Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game Retains What You Loved, But With a Much-Needed Modern Update
Over the past 13 years, Marvel Legendary has remained a staple of game nights, thanks to its strategic depth and expansive roster of Marvel characters. The upcoming 2nd Edition is poised to take the original gameplay experience and modernize it significantly. Players can expect a complete overhaul that acknowledges the various expansions that have been released since the game’s inception, with many cards in the base set being redesigned and rebalanced.
One of the most exciting aspects of the update is the all-new artwork accompanying every single card in the base game. The removal of borders allows the new illustrations to take center stage, showcasing the talents of an impressive roster of artists, including Andrea Adiletto, Don Aguillo, and many others. Each hero will now have unique artwork on their individual cards, a significant upgrade from the previous iteration, enhancing the visual experience of the game.

Players will also be able to enjoy new characters and Masterminds, including the much-loved Miles Morales Spider-Man. Replacing Deadpool in the hero lineup, players can still use him by purchasing the Legendary Deadpool set. Along with Miles, there will be a new villainous Mastermind, Doctor Octopus, and a newly introduced villain group known as the Sinister Syndicate.

The 2nd Edition also introduces 10 S.H.I.E.L.D. Officer Specialists, along with revamped game mechanics to enhance the overall experience. For example, a new ‘Warmup Round’ in 4 and 5-player games is designed to minimize early villain escapes, while players can now agree on a Starting HQ Mulligan if two or more cards cost 7 or more. Such updates make the game not only more engaging but also more accessible to newcomers.

Moreover, players can look forward to the introduction of Epic Masterminds, which will ramp up the challenge for seasoned players. The original Masterminds now have an Epic version that is considerably more daunting, while standard Villains have been rebalanced to escalate the game’s challenge level. Additionally, the 8 original schemes received updates, now incorporating an exciting 9th scheme to spice up gameplay.

Finally, gameplay enhancements include optimizing card stacks based on player counts to ensure fairness and player engagement, as well as an improved solo mode that allows for more turns before the Villain Deck runs out. These comprehensive changes reflect the designers’ commitment to creating an engaging experience suitable for all types of players.
The official release date for Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game has yet to be announced, but fans can rest assured that it will hit the shelves this year. Stay tuned for updates as we uncover more details about this exciting release!
