The Woodlands Children’s Museum Celebrates Children’s Book Week

From November 4th to November 7th, The Woodlands Children’s Museum is set to host its biannual Children’s Book Week celebration, a vibrant homage to the joy of reading. This beloved initiative, which began in 1919, is recognized as the longest-running national literacy campaign in the United States. It unifies schools, museums, bookstores, and libraries across the nation under the shared mission of enhancing literacy and cultivating a love for children’s literature.

A Vision for Literacy

Angela Colton, the Executive Director of The Woodlands Children’s Museum, emphasizes the importance of language fundamentals — reading, rhyming, singing, and talking. Colton states, “Because of this, we’re excited to offer a week of special events. Children’s Book Week is designed to help families connect with each other and enjoy the rewarding experience of books.” This sentiment encapsulates the spirit of the week-long event, promoting the idea that books can create deeper connections among families.

Schedule of Events

The week is packed with engaging programs that cater to young readers and their families.

Tuesday, November 4

  • Rhyme Time at 9:30 AM: An interactive session where young guests can enjoy music and rhyming.
  • Picture Book Boogie at 11:00 AM: Attendees can participate in creative movement activities inspired by their favorite picture books. Children will also enjoy a special visit from Peter Rabbit during these sessions, adding a touch of magic to the experience.

Wednesday, November 5

  • Read to Pups from Pets with a Mission (9:30 AM – 10:45 AM): A unique opportunity for children to practice reading with friendly furry companions.
  • Houston Grand Opera’s Storybook presentation at 11:00 AM: Based on Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning book “The Snowy Day,” this presentation brings the wonder of winter’s first snowfall to life.
  • Picture Book Bingo at noon: A fun on-stage game where children can interact and win prizes linked to their favorite stories.

Friday, November 7

  • Author Visit with Joy Saxton at 11:00 AM: Joy will read from her enchanting book, "Joy and the Far Away Land," sharing tales of adventure, friendship, and the beauty of understanding different cultures. After the reading, families can purchase signed copies of her books until 12:15 PM. Additionally, children can once again meet Peter Rabbit for photo opportunities throughout the day at 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM.

Admission Details

Participating in the week’s festivities is included in the price of admission. Tickets cost $9 for guests over the age of one, while museum members can attend for free. The museum encourages guests to pre-purchase tickets through their website, ensuring a smooth entry on event days.
