In a thrilling conclusion to the regular season, the Youngstown State Penguins orchestrated a remarkable performance against Northern Iowa, winning 35-32. The spotlight shone brightly on quarterback Beau Brungard, whose dynamic abilities once again left a profound impact on the outcome of the game.
A Game of Impressive Stats
Brungard showcased his dual-threat capabilities, completing 20 of 25 passes for 226 yards and tossing two touchdowns. Yet, his running game was arguably even more impressive, as he carried the ball 22 times for 143 yards and crossed the goal line three times. With these stellar statistics, Brungard solidified his status as a key player for the Penguins—one that head coach Doug Phillips clearly trusts.
“You just have confidence when the ball’s in his hands,” Phillips remarked. “He’s gonna make great decisions with it and has the ability at any time to take it to the house.”
Historic Win in the UNI-Dome
This victory marked a significant milestone for the Penguins, as it was their first win at the UNI-Dome since 1999. For Coach Phillips, who took the reins in 2020, this was also a personal celebration as it was his first win in a dome.
“There’s a lot at stake when you’re on the road in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Northern Iowa is a great program with great tradition,” Phillips noted. The win not only gave the Penguins momentum but also positioned them favorably for the upcoming FCS playoffs.
Brungard’s Early Dominance
The tone of the game was set early, with Brungard starting off red-hot. He completed 12 consecutive passes for 130 yards, putting the Penguins on the board first with a 7-yard touchdown run following a swift five-play drive initiated by Kylon “Flash” Wilson’s electrifying 41-yard kick return.
The Penguins’ defense, a crucial factor in their win, rose to the occasion immediately after. When the Panthers threatened at the YSU 13-yard line, linebacker Mike Wells and defensive back DJ Harris executed a textbook tackle that forced a fumble—not only stopping Northern Iowa’s momentum but allowing the Penguins to reclaim possession.
A Balanced Attack
Following the turnover, Brungard ignited a drive that showcased both his arm and legs. He connected with Wilson for a 49-yard pass that relieved the offense from the shadow of their end zone. With a little less than four minutes left in the first quarter, Brungard added another touchdown with a 29-yard run, extending the Penguins’ lead to 14-0.
The momentum kept rolling as the Penguins continued to capitalize on key plays. A beautifully executed 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Alex McDonald and a final 7-yard score just before halftime saw Youngstown State heading into the break with a 28-3 lead.
Northern Iowa’s Resilience
The second half, however, was a different story as Northern Iowa made their intentions clear. Coming out of the locker room, the Panthers quickly chipped away at the deficit with a powerful 64-yard catch-and-run. Northern Iowa scored again a few plays later, making it 28-10 and generating a palpable sense of urgency.
While the Penguins initially responded, including a 3-yard touchdown pass to running back Ethan Wright, the Panthers displayed resilience by continually pushing back. Their relentless effort led them to a tight 35-32 score with just over six minutes left in the game.
Defense Holds Firm
In a nail-biting segment late in the fourth quarter, the Penguin defense held its ground. After a critical sack by Graydon Rollins and Carston Marshall, Northern Iowa faced a crucial fourth down. The subsequent stop regained possession for YSU and allowed them to run down the remaining clock with Brungard showcasing his ability to execute under pressure—confirming that having the ball in his hands was a safe bet.
This matchup not only showcased the remarkable talent of Beau Brungard but also illustrated the pervasive determination of the Youngstown State Penguins as they gear up for the FCS playoffs. The selection show is set to air on ESPNU, and all eyes will be on YSU as they aim to solidify their playoff dreams after an impressive victory against a formidable opponent.
