Delivering Joy: The RHSPCA’s "Home for the Holidays" Adoption Program
In a heartwarming initiative that embodies the spirit of the season, the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA recently rolled out its "Home for the Holidays" adoption program, culminating in a delightful Christmas morning pet delivery. This initiative, which kicked off on December 16 and concluded on December 25, allowed local families to adopt pets from the shelter and have them delivered directly to their homes, creating moments of joy and companionship during a time traditionally focused on family and togetherness.
A Magical Christmas Morning
On Christmas Day at approximately 9:30 a.m., Harrisonburg resident Cindy Perez experienced a moment that many dream of during the holiday season. She received Bella, her newly adopted furry companion, an event that she described as a "holiday wish come true." Overwhelmed with joy, Perez expressed her feelings, saying, “Oh my God, I’m ecstatic. I’m over the moon. From the first time I laid eyes on her, I knew I wanted her.” This delightful surprise, coupled with the joyous delivery, transformed her Christmas into a memorable celebration.
Healing Through Adoption
For Perez, this Christmas was particularly meaningful. After the loss of her previous dog a few years ago, she found it difficult to open her heart to a new pet. But the moment she met Bella, something clicked. She shared, “I haven’t been able to open my heart to a new dog until now. I’m feeling all those emotions again — an overwhelming sense of love I haven’t felt in a long time.” This poignant connection showcases how pets can play an essential role in healing and restoring joy in people’s lives.
More Than Just Deliveries: A Life-Changing Experience
Huck Nawaz, the executive director of the RHSPCA, highlighted that the program is about more than just delivering animals to their new homes; it is about transforming lives. “It’s so important for the families and for us to experience that with them because it’s life changing,” Nawaz stated. By adding a new pet to their household, families commit to a lifetime of care and love, forging new bonds that enrich their lives.
Community Collaboration
The "Home for the Holidays" program was made possible through a partnership with Pendleton Community Bank, which provided vital support for the delivery operations. Sarah Hale, a business banking officer with the bank, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We love community involvement. It’s even more special to see a pet be delivered to its forever home.” This partnership reflects the strong sense of community that underpins the initiative, bringing residents together for a common cause.
Bella’s Journey
Bella’s story adds another layer of depth to the adoption narrative. Originally found wandering the streets of Harrisonburg, she was picked up by animal patrol and brought to the RHSPCA. Described as scared and nervous at first, Bella gradually learned to trust and open up around others. Perez’s decision to adopt Bella was serendipitous. Having fostered numerous kittens and puppies in the past, she had not anticipated that Bella would become her first "foster fail." “I wasn’t expecting to adopt her so quickly…this is just such a pleasant surprise that, like my adoption came on Christmas Day,” she recalled.
Ongoing Adoption Opportunities
For those who missed out on adopting during the holiday season, the RHSPCA continues to have animals available for adoption, encouraging community members to consider giving a pet a forever home. For more information on available animals and the adoption process, interested individuals can visit the shelter’s website.
Through initiatives like "Home for the Holidays," the RHSPCA not only facilitates adoptions but also fosters deeper connections within the community, reinforcing the idea that love and companionship can come in many forms, especially during the holiday season.
