The Challenge of Traveling with Pets
Traveling with furry companions can be a mixed bag of joy and anxiety. Emotionally and financially, our dogs and cats add complexity to holiday travel. Not only do pet parents need to establish suitable arrangements, but they must also wrestle with feelings of guilt during separation. A recent survey by Kinship reveals fascinating trends and insights into how pet owners navigate travel during this festive season.
Who’s Traveling with Their Pets?
According to the survey, a significant majority of pet parents (54%) plan on bringing their pets along on their travels. Interestingly, most choose to hit the road rather than take to the skies: 51% of pet owners will travel by car, while a mere 3% plan to fly with their furry friends.
When it comes to generational trends, Millennials lead the pack with 56% intending to travel with their pets, followed closely by Gen Z (51%) and Gen X (49%). Surprisingly, only 40% of Baby Boomers are planning a pet-inclusive trip. Regional differences are striking as well; for instance, a whopping 92% of pet owners in Wisconsin plan to travel with their pets, compared to just 18% in Montana.
The Cost of Traveling with Pets
Financial considerations are paramount when planning holiday travels. The average American pet parent estimates a budget of $242 for pet travel expenses over the holidays. Among different generational groups, Gen X emerges as the biggest spenders at an average of $281, followed closely by Millennials at $277. Meanwhile, Boomers are budgeting $257, and Gen Z plans on an expenditure of $248.
Gender differences add another layer to this financial picture. Male pet owners anticipate spending about $277, while their female counterparts budget slightly lower at $271. Geographic variation also comes into play; for instance, pet parents in Maryland are prepared to spend an average of $396, whereas those in Pennsylvania allocate just $165.
Major Concerns for Pet Parents
Navigating travel with pets comes with its own set of worries. The survey identifies five primary concerns among pet owners:

- Finding Pet-Friendly Accommodations (17%)
- Pet Safety During Travel (15%)
- Pet Behavior Around Strangers (12%)
- Maintaining a Consistent Routine / Access to Veterinary Care in Emergencies (10%, tied)
Guilt is another emotional concern for pet parents; 30% reported feeling guilty when separated from their pets. Millennials express the most guilt, with 33% admitting to it, whereas Boomers feel more sadness (26%) regarding separation.
The Stress Factor
As the holiday hustle unfolds, stress levels climb alongside budgets. Nearly one in six (15%) pet parents describe their planning experience as “extremely stressed,” while over a third (36%) report feeling “moderately stressed.” Notably, Millennials and Gen X-ers experience the highest levels of anxiety about traveling with their pets—16% of both demographics claim to feel “very stressed.” Gender differences also emerge, with 18% of women revealing they are “very stressed” compared to 12% of men.
