Embracing AI in Research: A Personal Journey
A couple of years ago, artificial intelligence (AI) felt like a futuristic buzzword—intriguing yet distant from my research reality. However, that perception shifted dramatically in late 2022 with the release of ChatGPT-3.5. The thought crossed my mind, “Why not give it a try?” Little did I know that this decision would transform how I approach my work.
First Encounter: AI at a Conference
My first real experience with AI came unexpectedly at a conference. During a talk, a speaker referenced a particularly thought-provoking paper, and suddenly, I had a wild idea. I pulled out my phone and used an AI tool to query the PDF directly amid the discussion. To my astonishment, it provided exactly the information I sought on the first try. That moment was an eye-opener; I felt the vast potential of AI tools.
Discovering the Spectrum of Tools
Since that initial experience, I’ve settled into a rhythm with AI tools, finding them remarkably versatile. To be clear, though, AI isn’t a magical solution. It can’t replace critical thinking, deep reading, or hands-on lab work. However, when leveraged thoughtfully, it significantly enhances efficiency and access to information.

They can extract essential elements such as the main hypothesis, sample size, and the statistical methods employed.

One of my favorite practices is testing the same prompt across various AI platforms to observe how each interprets it. The variety of responses is often surprising and, admittedly, a bit of fun. Sometimes, I even request that AI merge the results into one cohesive summary. It’s fascinating to see how these tools each bring their own flavor to the table.
AI as a Technical Assistant
For technical tasks, AI can be a serious time-saver. Need assistance with a command-line error or looking to pick up a new Windows trick? It often feels like having a patient, on-call tutor. Recently, I needed a free C++ code editor and compiler—a search that once consumed over half an hour of combing through forums and reviews. Instead, I turned to ChatGPT, which promptly provided a curated list of options, complete with pros and cons. That kind of time saved accumulates incredibly fast across diverse tasks.
Research Revolutionized
In my research endeavors, particularly focusing on gene expression patterns to better understand brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, AI has been a game-changer. The process of mapping gene functions used to entail countless hours of cross-referencing databases and academic papers. Now, thanks to tools like Perplexity AI and Elicit, I can access reliable, peer-reviewed summaries in seconds. That said, I always make it a priority to double-check the sources; diligence is essential when using AI.
The Imperfections of AI
Nonetheless, it’s crucial to understand that AI isn’t infallible. It has the ability to sound confident while being entirely incorrect. Since it reflects the biases found in its training data, unchecked use can introduce errors into our work. For this reason, I consistently verify AI outputs and prefer platforms that cite their sources. I remind myself that AI should be a tool that assists rather than replaces the scientific method.
The Art of Questioning
Ultimately, the value of AI relies heavily on the quality of questions we pose. Crafting clear, well-thought-out prompts leads to more accurate and relevant answers. It’s our critical thinking, deep reading, and domain expertise that keep the results grounded. With a sense of curiosity tempered by skepticism, AI becomes a powerful collaborator that amplifies human insight rather than overshadowing it.
The journey into fully embracing AI in research is still unfolding, and each day presents new opportunities. As these tools evolve, so too will our methodologies, leading us to insights that were once beyond our reach.
