Daigakon: A New Dawn for Anime and Gaming Enthusiasts at UVA
In the vibrant setting of Charlottesville, Virginia, an exhilarating new cultural event is captivating the local community: Daigakon. This anime and gaming convention, orchestrated by four ambitious University of Virginia (UVA) students, marks a significant milestone not only for the university but also for the broader community of pop culture enthusiasts.
The Genesis of an Idea
The seeds of Daigakon were first sown back in 2021. However, due to the disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, plans were repeatedly delayed. Fast forward to 2025, when one of the convention’s co-organizers, Joe Liang, reignited the idea. “They were like, maybe you guys can do it next year. I’m like, no way, we’re not doing this. It’s like too much work,” Liang recalled, showcasing both the challenges and his initial hesitation to dive into such a monumental task.
A Team Effort
Despite the daunting nature of organizing a convention, Liang, along with his fellow co-organizers—Link Fu, Charlene Huynh, and Cathy Le—embarked on the journey with a robust commitment. They commenced their preparations in earnest during late 2025, dedicating two exhaustive semesters to coordinate what would become a landmark event in UVA’s history. “A lot of planning, a lot of all-nighters. I think it was a lot of coordination across a lot of parties,” Fu explained, highlighting the extensive teamwork that characterized their effort.
Their planning involved a multitude of logistical tasks: arranging performances, securing a venue, organizing arts and crafts activities, and curating a vendor hall that would appeal to attendees. The team was initially inundated with interest, receiving around 80 vendor applications. However, due to space limitations, they could accommodate only 55 vendors, a challenge that Huynh tackled as the convention’s vendor lead. “The process took about two months,” she noted, reflecting on the demanding timeline they navigated, especially given that conventions typically require a year or more of preparation.
Inspiration and Vision
Each co-organizer brought unique experiences and insights to the table. Cathy Le’s inspiration stemmed from attending a student-run convention at the University of Maryland the previous year. The vibrant energy and sense of community she experienced there inspired her to replicate that atmosphere at UVA. “The whole energy and vibe is something that I really wanted to recreate at UVA. Since I felt like sometimes I didn’t really get that support, I want other people to get that support as well,” Le shared, further emphasizing the importance of building a welcoming community for students and local residents alike.
A Gathering of Enthusiasts
The convention represented more than just an event; it served as a crucial conduit for fans to connect with one another. Liang articulated this sentiment perfectly. “Bringing everyone together and having people share their interests and really express it in such a venue… in a place like Charlottesville where there’s a lot of people who like pop culture but maybe don’t have a venue to express it. It’s a precious opportunity that we should capitalize on,” he noted, reiterating the significance of gatherings like Daigakon in fostering connections.
The Big Day
When the big day arrived, the energy was palpable despite facing some challenges—unfavorable weather, it being Easter Sunday, and the inevitable nerves that accompanied their first convention. The four co-organizers welcomed attendees with open arms, reflecting on their hard work and the excitement that filled the air.
Daigakon not only opened its doors to attendees but also provided a vibrant platform for exploration, creativity, and community-building among anime and video game lovers in Charlottesville. It showcased the students’ dedication to fostering a supportive environment, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to indulge in their interests.
The Future of Daigakon
While the inaugural Daigakon is an accomplishment in its own right, it also lays a strong foundation for future endeavors. As students and community members alike expressed their enthusiasm, it’s clear that this convention is poised to become an annual staple in the region’s cultural landscape. The tireless efforts of Liang, Fu, Huynh, and Le not only celebrate pop culture but also signify a collective commitment to creating lasting connections among fans.
In an age where digital interactions often overshadow in-person gatherings, Daigakon stands as a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and creativity. As celebrations of anime and gaming continue to flourish, the spirit of Daigakon will surely inspire others to create similar avenues for connection and expression.
