Just days after saying goodbye to their cherished dog, Rufus, the Reiff family from Alameda, California, experienced a remarkable twist of fate that would lead them to a discovery no one could have imagined.

A Lifelong Companion

Rufus was a rat terrier-Chihuahua mix adopted in 2016 from the San Francisco SPCA, playing a central role in the Reiff family’s life. From their engagement to their wedding and the births of their children, Maya and Benjamin, Rufus had been part of every significant moment. “He was involved in our proposal. He was involved in our wedding. He was literally dressed up in a little tuxedo,” Jillian recalled fondly. In the wake of their loss, Jillian sought comfort for her daughter, Maya, by scrolling through rescue profiles. One evening, while browsing Muttville Senior Dog Rescue’s Instagram page, Maya pointed out a dog that instantly caught her mother’s eye: “Mom, look, it looks like Rufus.” The resemblance was striking, with Jillian initially believing it was a photograph of her own dog. Just four days after Rufus’s passing, the Reiff family visited the San Francisco-based shelter. “It was like watching my dog — my dog that I’ve had for the past almost a decade of my family’s life — trotting right into the middle of Muttville,” Jillian recalled. Ziggy didn’t hesitate; he jumped into the car, walked into their home, and instantly made himself comfortable as if he had always belonged there. The emotional weight lifted almost immediately, with Jillian describing Ziggy as “a gift.”

Within days, Ziggy’s presence brought peace to a house that had been engulfed in sorrow. Seeing his happy face reminded the family of Rufus, and not just in looks. Ziggy’s behaviors echoed those of Rufus. “The way they approach the kids, the way they talk, howl, everything about them was the same,” Jillian said. I screamed at my job in my conference room. I almost passed out,” Jillian recounted.

She had adopted Rufus nine years earlier from the San Francisco SPCA, while Ziggy, now a senior, had recently been found as a stray and brought to Muttville.
