Rosemary Theresa Schmit, fondly known as Rosie, was born on February 9, 1935, to Frank and Catherine Rickinger. Growing up in a nurturing environment, she was instilled with values of hard work and community service, traits that defined her throughout her remarkable life. After graduating from Pius XI High School, she briefly embarked on a career in banking.
A Fateful Meeting
Her life took a delightful turn when she met her future husband, Gene, at the Nightingale Ballroom, a vibrant venue owned by his parents. Their connection was instantaneous, leading to a beautiful relationship that culminated in marriage on November 3, 1956, at St. Dominic’s Church.
Family Life
As a devoted wife and mother, Rosemary poured herself into raising her three sons—Randy, Rick, and Robb. The family business, comprising of Schmit’s Ballroom and Schmit Realty, Inc., benefited greatly from her behind-the-scenes efforts. Rosemary’s contributions went beyond mere business; they reflected her unwavering commitment to family and community.
Community Engagement
Rosemary’s community involvement was extensive. As President of the Grafton Women’s Club, she advocated for women’s interests and served in several key roles. She also held the position of secretary at St. Joseph’s Parish School, enriching her community further. Her artistic talents shone through her passion for painting, often enhanced by the many art classes she attended.
In her later years, she embraced the vibrant spirit of the Red Hat Ladies Club, where she was affectionately termed “Queen Mum.” Additionally, she was active with WOW (Women of Wisdom) and regularly volunteered at St. Joseph’s Parish, showcasing her deep commitment to serving those around her.
A Style Icon
Rosemary was not only known for her kindness but also for her impeccable sense of style. Always dressing to the nines, she exuded elegance, even in her later years when stiletto heels became impractical. Instead, she made a statement with sequined canes and stylish walkers, affirming that one could retain youthful flair at any age.
The Heart of the Home
Nothing brought Rosemary more joy than her family. She was the undeniable heart of her home, regularly hosting family gatherings filled with laughter and delicious meals. Her legendary cheesecake has become a treasured family recipe, enjoyed by many. Her six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren were showered with unconditional love, evidence of a nurturing spirit that knew no bounds.
A Legacy of Love
Rosemary is survived by her son Rick, along with daughters-in-law Stacy and Conny. Additionally, she leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Tyler, Aaron (with Alex), Andrew (with Kaley), Matt, Nick (with special friend Kalli), and granddaughter Aly (with Charlie Radke). She also cherished her relationships with her sisters-in-law, Bette Ott and JoAnn Paulus, along with numerous nieces and nephews who adored her.
Reunited in Spirit
In her passing, Rosemary left behind cherished memories of her husband Gene and sons Randy and Robb, as well as her beloved parents and brother Frank. One cannot overlook the companionship of her little dog, Chili, who brought her much comfort in her later years.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Gratitude fills the hearts of her family towards her caregiver, Luda, and the teams at Prime Horizon and Horizon Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, Rosemary’s family requests donations be made to a preferred charity, continuing her legacy of service and love.
Final Farewell
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for February 19, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grafton. The ceremony begins at 12:30 PM, following a visitation from 10:30 AM until 12:15 PM. Family and friends will gather to honor her life and memory, with burial taking place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences can be shared at Mueller Funeral Home.
