March 19, 2026: A New Era in Public Health Innovation
A Groundbreaking Initiative
This month, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Public Health (CAIPH) at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health launched its first-ever AI and Public Health Showcase and Datathon. Over the course of three exciting days, this event brought together a diverse group of individuals—including industry experts, academic researchers, students, and local community members—around a common challenge: to leverage public health data and artificial intelligence (AI) to generate innovative health solutions for the future.
Visionary Leadership
According to CAIPH director Dr. Michael Kosorok, a W.R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of biostatistics, the utilization of AI offers almost limitless potential for data analysis. “With AI, you can ask analysis questions and learn about data in very flexible ways,” said Kosorok. His emphasis was on collaboration across various sectors to ensure that AI technology is responsibly employed for health improvement.
Nancy Messonnier, MD, dean of the Gillings School, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re using it to improve lives in our communities.” She highlighted the event as a reflection of the team’s collective enthusiasm and willingness to explore how AI technology can be beneficial.
Insights from Industry Leaders
Held at the scenic Gillings School campus at UNC-Chapel Hill, the first day featured enlightening presentations from industry leaders such as Chuck Robbins (CEO of Cisco Systems), Amir Rubin (CEO of Healthier Capital), and Karen Libby (value and transformation lead at Amazon Web Services), each discussing the promise of AI to enhance the public good. Robbins noted, “This is a defining moment for global public health,” urging participants to handle this powerful technology ethically and responsibly.
The event also featured remarks from esteemed faculty, including Gillings School Dean Nancy Messonnier and UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts, who underscored the importance of AI in contemporary public health research.
The Datathon Challenge
The subsequent days of the event saw six diverse teams engage in a datathon, harnessing large public health datasets to tackle pressing public health issues. Guided by CAIPH’s chief data scientist, Dr. Vincent Toups, participants received mentorship and technical resources from AWS and the Gillings School, making this an invaluable opportunity for collaborative problem-solving.
Teams comprised individuals from various academic and professional backgrounds, fostering cross-disciplinary learning. This collaborative environment allowed participants to sharpen their AI skills while gaining insights from teammates with different life experiences.
Innovative Applications of AI
Dr. Kosorok elaborated on how AI facilitated quick and thoughtful data analysis during the competition. Teams were tasked with addressing crucial research questions, leading to innovative public health solutions. “Today’s AI tools allow researchers to move more efficiently,” he said, and many of the projects involved significant topics such as the impacts of COVID-19 policies, the influence of neighborhood features on community health, and the development of a mobile application designed to connect individuals with tailored local health resources.
The Broader Vision of CAIPH
Established in late 2024, CAIPH aims to be at the forefront of innovation in global public health through the integration of AI. Its interests span a variety of domains—including climate and environmental health, health behavior and education, health policy and economics, and precision health. The recent Datathon event exemplifies CAIPH’s commitment to exploring unique approaches to public health through the lens of AI.
As Dr. Messonnier put it, “CAIPH is a milestone for the School.” With its ambitious goals and tangible outcomes from the datathon, the center is well-positioned to make significant strides in improving public health and addressing health inequities both locally and globally.
