New UMass Lowell AI Computing Research Center Brings Together Disciplines to Propel AI Innovations

Published:

Lowell, Massachusetts – April 23, 2026

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping industries and everyday life, UMass Lowell has taken a bold step forward with the launch of the Center for AI Computing Research (AICORE). This initiative aims to unite the university’s extensive expertise across various disciplines to accelerate innovation, strengthen industry partnerships, and equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in an AI-focused job market.

The establishment of AICORE reflects a comprehensive approach to AI research, encompassing fields ranging from science and engineering to business, health, and the humanities. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, the center sets the stage for transformative applications in critical areas such as defense, healthcare, and robotics, going beyond traditional boundaries.

A Vision for Practical AI Application

At the core of AICORE’s mission is the translation of advanced AI research into tangible, real-world solutions. Anne Maglia, vice chancellor for research, innovation, and economic development, emphasizes the importance of connecting research to real-world applications. “AICORE strengthens our ability to connect research with real-world applications and deepen our partnerships with industry,” she states. This shift not only benefits researchers and industry stakeholders but also prepares students for a future where AI is ubiquitous across sectors.

Fostering Student Engagement and Development

One of the most exciting aspects of AICORE is its emphasis on creating opportunities for students to engage in hands-on experiences. In this rapidly evolving field, practical experience is invaluable. As students collaborate on AI projects alongside faculty and industry experts, they will develop not only technical skills but also crucial problem-solving capabilities, positioning them for in-demand roles in various sectors.

“AICORE will ensure our students are experienced in the types of applied AI projects that reflect the future of this technology in the real world,” Paul Bryce, interim dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences, explains. This approach to education prepares students to navigate the complexities of AI in real-world applications effectively.

Critical Areas of Focus

AICORE has identified three critical areas of focus that will drive its research agenda:

  • AI Safety, Interpretability, and Alignment: Developing trustworthy AI systems that behave predictably is essential for the technology’s widespread adoption and understanding.
  • Efficient and Effective AI Models: The research will also explore ways to build more efficient AI models, paving the way for new foundations in AI research.
  • Interactive AI Systems: Creating AI systems capable of effective human interaction in practical settings is crucial for advancing human-AI collaboration.

These focus areas are not just about technical advancements; they ensure that AI development aligns with human needs and societal values. Anna Rumshisky, the director of AICORE and an associate professor in the Miner School of Computer and Information Sciences, underscores this vision: “AICORE is designed to push the boundaries of what AI can do while ensuring it remains safe, interpretable, and aligned with human needs.”

A Collaborative Approach to Innovation

AICORE’s interdisciplinary framework brings together expertise from computer science, engineering, social sciences, and business. This unique collaboration aims to tackle the pressing challenges in AI more effectively than ever before. By encouraging a diverse set of voices and perspectives, the center is shaping a more inclusive and innovative approach to AI research.

As UMass Lowell steps boldly into the future of AI through the establishment of AICORE, both students and industry partners stand to gain tremendously. With the focus on real-world applications, interdisciplinary collaboration, and student engagement, AICORE is not just a center for research but a catalyst for future AI innovations that will impact various facets of society.
