AI in Libraries: UNC Greensboro’s Approach

MLIS Researcher Designs AI-Themed Games for Academic Libraries

Libraries have long been sanctuaries for knowledge seekers, a safe haven for inquiries spanning diverse topics. Today, however, the spotlight has shifted towards a prominent theme: artificial intelligence (AI). As this technology evolves, the questions surrounding its role in various sectors—workforce, recreation, and academia—are multiplying. This surge has highlighted a pressing need for librarians to familiarize themselves with AI, particularly generative AI.

Despite considerable progress, many librarians find themselves grappling with a dual dilemma: understanding the technology and comfortably discussing it with their patrons. H. Blake-Lee, a graduate student from UNC Greensboro, is on a mission to bridge this gap.

Bridging the Gap Between Knowledge and Inquiry

Blake-Lee’s journey into the realm of information and library science began, not with the aspiration to just be a librarian, but to forge connections within library communities. Her goals involve fostering dialogue among varied perspectives on AI, especially in academic settings where there is palpable tension around the subject.

Her capstone project, “Understanding Generative AI in Academic Libraries,” was pivotal. Through her research, Blake-Lee discovered that while a majority of librarians acknowledge AI-related concerns, their comfort levels in discussing the technology were alarmingly low—hovering around just 30-35%. Furthermore, 70% of librarians expressed a genuine interest in learning about AI but preferred interaction over traditional computer-based learning methods.

Utilizing Visuals to Facilitate Understanding

Understanding AI can be an abstract concept, particularly for professionals without a computer science background. Blake-Lee’s solution? A hands-on, engaging approach rooted in her artistic past. With a foundation in studio art and sociology, she has always recognized the power of visual stimuli to evoke conversations and perceptions.

She relates this to the experience of reflecting on an old family photo. It’s not just about the image; it’s an invitation to share memories, emotions, and different perspectives. Using this method, she aims to help librarians articulate their thoughts on AI and its implications.

Game Design Meets AI Awareness

Harnessing her background in game design, Blake-Lee developed “Caution!”, a card game designed to enhance understanding of AI among library staff and student workers. Funded by the Impact Through Innovation program, the game aims to combine fun with learning, emphasizing diversity of thought on the topic of AI.

The game consists of 200 illustrated cards that showcase various images—some AI-generated and others created by local artists and UNCG alumni. Participants will draw cards and brainstorm terms or concepts related to AI based on the images. The emphasis is not on identifying which illustrations are AI-generated, but rather on facilitating dialogue around differing interpretations of the visuals.

Gameplay Philosophy: Community and Conversation

In “Caution!”, the gameplay begins with participants circling a card, each sharing a word that encapsulates their impression of its imagery. To promote authentic dialogue, players share their words simultaneously to avoid influencing one another. Afterward, they can explore images that resonate with their peers’ words and discuss the motivations behind their selections.

This format creates a platform for rich dialogue where players can connect and learn from one another’s perspectives on AI, creating a welcoming environment for discussing its intricacies.

Collaboration: A Collective Effort

The development of “Caution!” has been a collaborative journey. Blake-Lee credits faculty, particularly her mentor, Dr. Sonia Archer-Capuzzo, whose guidance has been instrumental in navigating the intricacies of proposal writing and practical implementation of her ideas.

Additionally, Blake-Lee’s engagement with other professionals, such as Steve Cramer, a business librarian, enhances her understanding of how AI intersects with various fields. Together, they’re set to present a webinar focused on AI tools and their integration within scholarly databases.

The Global Perspective: Expanding Horizons

With the groundwork laid for “Caution!”, Blake-Lee envisions broadening its application beyond libraries. She is gathering feedback for its adaptation across different professional landscapes. Excitingly, her work caught the attention of the National Library of Ireland, where discussions about potential collaborations using local art collections for similar games took place.

This global traction highlights the universal relevance of her initiatives, demonstrating that understanding AI extends beyond local boundaries.

Blake-Lee’s journey embodies a modern exploration of AI in libraries, where engagement, conversation, and varying perspectives shape the way institutions adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. Through community-focused projects like “Caution!”, she seeks to empower librarians, fostering not just understanding but a collaborative spirit as they navigate the complexities of AI together.
