GCBC and Southern Miss Introduce Executive AI Leadership Academy with First Gulf Coast Cohort

Published:

The Launch of the Executive Leadership Academy: Executives and Artificial Intelligence

On March 16, 2026, the Gulf Coast Business Council (GCBC), in collaboration with The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), inaugurated the Executive Leadership Academy: Executives and Artificial Intelligence at the USM Gulf Park Campus. This groundbreaking program marks a pivotal step for regional leaders as they navigate the complexities of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their organizational strategies.

A Tailored Program for Senior Leaders

The Executive Leadership Academy is a nine-month initiative tailored specifically for senior executives tasked with the responsibility of incorporating AI into their organizations. In today’s fast-paced business climate, where industries such as health care, shipping, finance, and government are undergoing rapid transformations due to AI advancements, the academy serves as a vital resource. Its goal is to equip leaders with the necessary knowledge and frameworks to facilitate responsible adoption of AI, enhancing regional competitiveness along the way.

Opening Session Insights

During the opening session, the 28 participants delved into the strategic implications of AI. Focus areas included assessing organizational readiness, establishing governance frameworks, and discussing responsible implementation practices. The program uniquely emphasizes the role of leadership in leveraging AI as a tool to improve decision-making, spur innovation, and effectively manage emerging risks.

Strategic Investment in Leadership

Jamie Miller, president and CEO of the GCBC, articulated the academy’s role as a strategic investment in both regional leadership and long-term economic sustainability. Miller noted, “Through this academy, GCBC is helping equip Gulf Coast executives with the insight, tools, and peer network they need to lead confidently, responsibly, and strategically.”

The Partnership Between Business and Academia

Dr. Greg Bradley, executive director of Executive Education at Southern Miss, highlighted the strong partnership between academic research and regional business leadership. He emphasized, “Artificial intelligence is reshaping every industry, but technology alone does not create transformation; leadership does.” This sentiment underscores the need for leaders to harness the potential of AI effectively rather than only reacting to its implications.

Monthly Executive Sessions

Participants in the academy will meet monthly for full-day sessions, diving deep into essential topics surrounding AI. These sessions will cover governance, infrastructure, innovation, workforce transformation, and strategic implementation, creating an environment for comprehensive learning and growth.

The inaugural cohort represents a diverse array of organizations, including:

Building Practical Frameworks

Moreover, the program encourages heightened collaboration among senior leaders, further strengthening the connections within the Gulf Coast region.

In embarking on this transformative journey, participants are not only poised to become leaders in AI integration but also champions of a future where technology and ethical leadership go hand in hand. This collaborative initiative not only reflects a commitment to professional development but also aims to shape the future of the Gulf Coast business landscape.

As organizations increasingly prioritize the role of AI, the Executive Leadership Academy positions its participants at the forefront of innovation and sustainable leadership in a rapidly evolving world.
