Exploring the Best Family Cars in the UK: Beyond the SUV Trend

Choosing a family car is no small feat—it involves careful consideration of versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. As families navigate the complexities of life, their vehicles must manage an array of demands, from school runs to weekend adventures. With a focus on practicality and economy, a group of motoring journalists from Autocar has released an intriguing list of the best family cars currently available in the UK. Surprisingly, none of the top three contenders are SUVs, a mainstream preference in today’s market.

The Unexpected Winner: BMW 3 Series Touring

Kicking off the list, the BMW 3 Series Touring takes the crown as the best family car. This estate variant of the beloved 3 Series saloon seamlessly balances functionality with driving pleasure. Journalists Keith WR Jones and Sam Phillips extolled its virtues, stating that the Touring proves that family life and enjoyable driving are not mutually exclusive.

The M340i, a performance-focused estate, further solidifies the appeal, offering a blend of fun and practicality, while the 330e, a plug-in hybrid, attracts attention from both family buyers and company car fleets.

However, even with such accolades, the BMW isn’t without its drawbacks. Critics pointed out the absence of a diesel option, a smaller boot compared to rivals, and escalating costs with additional features. Nevertheless, its overall performance and driving experience resonate with families who refuse to compromise on enjoyment.

The Runner-Up: Dacia Jogger

In second place, the Dacia Jogger shines as an economical choice for families in need of advanced space without breaking the bank. Dacia has carved a niche for producing well-constructed vehicles at competitive prices, and the Jogger is a testament to that reputation. It offers a “space-efficient” design with seating for seven, making it an ideal all-rounder for families.

Though it excels in spaciousness, the Jogger did receive some critique for lacking certain driver assistance features and less-than-ideal access to its third row of seats. Some engine options may also seem less refined than expected. Nevertheless, the reviewers concluded that the Jogger’s robust interior can withstand the inevitable wear and tear from kids and their paraphernalia, making it a solid family vehicle.

Third Place: The Timeless Volkswagen Golf

Completing the top three is the Volkswagen Golf, a familiar face in the automotive landscape that has stood the test of time. Now entering its Mk8.5 iteration, the Golf continues to adapt with improved technology and a wealth of options for budget-conscious families.

Despite its enduring popularity, the Golf does come with its set of challenges. Critics noted that the boot space falls short compared to some of its competitors, and concerns surrounding the reliability of its technological features could make potential buyers hesitate. However, the Golf remains a versatile choice for families, offering a range of price and performance options even as SUVs dominate the market.

Navigating Beyond the SUV Trend

The emergence of these family cars emphasizes a significant trend in consumer behavior: the demand for functionality, safety, and an enjoyable driving experience within traditional body styles. While SUVs might dominate headlines and sales charts, the BMW 3 Series Touring, Dacia Jogger, and Volkswagen Golf collectively demonstrate that families don’t have to rely on larger vehicles for practicality and comfort.

As buyers make critical choices for vehicles that best suit their lifestyle, these top contenders prove that the right family car may very well lie in traditional estates and hatchbacks—redefining what it means to balance family needs with driving enjoyment in a modern world.
