Kemp Backs Derek Dooley for Georgia Senate Seat, Believes Outsider Can Defeat Democrat Jon Ossoff – newspressnow.com

Georgia’s Political Landscape Heats Up: Governor Kemp Endorses Derek Dooley for Senate

By Jeff Amy | Associated Press

In a significant move that could reshape the 2026 U.S. Senate race in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has endorsed Republican Derek Dooley. The announcement came as Kemp argues that an outsider, devoid of congressional experience, is the best candidate to critique current Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff’s record.

The Governor’s Perspective

Kemp expressed strong sentiments about the necessity for fresh perspectives in politics. “I’m a firm believer that we need a political outsider to do that,” he stated, emphasizing that Dooley has both the ability to focus on Ossoff’s performance and to envision a brighter future for Georgia. Kemp underscored that "that is not a politician," alluding to Dooley’s outsider status.

An Expected Endorsement

The endorsement, while significant, was not entirely unexpected. Before Dooley officially entered the race, Kemp had already made intentions known to support him. This underscores Kemp’s commitment to Dooley, as the governor has even allocated resources and key political aides to assist in the campaign. The 57-year-old Dooley has captured the governor’s backing at a critical moment when Georgia Republicans are keen on unseating Ossoff, who is regarded as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents.

The Republican Field

Dooley enters a competitive field that includes notable candidates such as U.S. Representatives Buddy Carter and Mike Collins, as well as activist Reagan Box. The dynamics of these candidates will play a crucial role in shaping the tone of the race as they strive to critique Ossoff’s tenure.

Focusing on Ossoff’s Record

As the campaign kicks off, Dooley has zeroed in on attacking Ossoff, leveraging his support for former President Donald Trump as a focal point. “What’s amazing is he wants to be our quarterback for the next six years,” Dooley remarked, implying that Ossoff’s political decisions disqualify him for reelection. He insists on earning the support of Georgians daily, stating, “I’m going to earn the support from the people of Georgia and give this Senate seat back to them.”

Dooley’s Political Background

Despite his enthusiasm and outsider appeal, Dooley’s political history raises eyebrows. Notably, he did not vote in the pivotal elections of 2016 and 2020 when Trump was a candidate. Citing being too “busy and distracted” due to his coaching career, his lack of voting could pose challenges in rallying the Republican base.

Criticism from Rivals

Collins has openly criticized Dooley’s candidacy, arguing that his lack of voting history might alienate core Republican voters crucial to winning the election. He posited that nominating someone with a questionable record could jeopardize their chances against Ossoff, emphasizing that “the low-propensity Trump voters will stay home.”

The Search for Trump’s Endorsement

Kemp has openly discussed his endorsement with Trump, stating that the former president “respects my decision.” However, there’s a notable absence of a formal endorsement from Trump, underscoring the ongoing competition among candidates to secure his backing. Collins pointed out that while Kemp’s support is valuable, Trump’s endorsement carries more weight in Georgia.

Competitive Political Climate

The political climate among Georgia Republicans is intensifying. Carter’s spokesperson noted that “there’s only one endorsement that matters in Georgia,” signaling the competitive nature of the primary race. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s spokesperson, Devon Cruz, remarked on Kemp’s endorsement, highlighting that it adds to the chaos in an already tumultuous Republican primary.

Derek Dooley’s Football Legacy

Beyond politics, Dooley comes from a storied football legacy. He is the son of the legendary University of Georgia coach Vince Dooley and, prior to his political ambitions, had a mixed coaching career that included a challenging stint with the Tennessee Volunteers. Dooley maintains that his background in sports has equipped him with essential leadership skills, drawing parallels between coaching and political leadership.

Emphasizing Leadership

At a recent tailgate event near the University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium, Dooley emphasized that “leadership matters” in both fields. He framed coaching as a means to unite people and foster opportunities, suggesting that these skills would translate well into his political pursuits as he seeks to connect with voters.

The Path Ahead

As Dooley’s campaign gains momentum, the competition among Republican candidates is likely to escalate. With various strategies being deployed and concerns over voter engagement, the race shapes up to be one of the most intriguing political contests in Georgia history. The unfolding narrative will shed light on how Dooley’s outsider status, coaching background, and the endorsement from Kemp influence the broader Republican efforts to reclaim a Senate seat in Georgia.
